No red carpet. No drone shots. No exclusive magazine cover of the dress.
Sophia Bush and Ashlyn Harris got married in summer 2025 in a small ceremony in upstate New York, with Harris’s two children there, a handful of flowers picked from the property, and, that night, marshmallows roasting over a fire as a family. Then they kept it to themselves for more than a year.
They shared the news on Wednesday, September 30, in a joint interview and memoir excerpt published by Vogue, as PinkNews and others reported.
The wedding, in their words
It sounds like the opposite of a production.
“The kids were just running and happy, and we picked flowers from the property and our daughter Sloane was holding them,” Harris said, per Yahoo’s write-up of the interview.
“It was so precious, and zero pressure,” Bush added. “I will never forget it, and I think wedding days sometimes aren’t like that.”
Harris’s children, Sloane and Ocean, were at the ceremony. Harris shares them with her ex-wife, fellow US women’s national team player Ali Krieger.
So why keep it quiet, and why tell now?
Bush framed the privacy as part of getting older and choosing what’s actually hers. “When you get to this stage in your life, you begin to unpack what’s yours and what’s always sort of been for everyone else,” she said.
But the word games were getting old. According to PinkNews, Bush said she didn’t want to keep calling Harris “my partner” on panels and in interviews. “You’re not my partner, you know? You’re my wife.”
Harris gave the reason that will land hardest for a lot of readers. “This conversation is not about Sophia and I,” she said. The visibility piece matters, she explained, “because there are still kids hiding who don’t feel seen.”
That’s the thing about a celebrity wedding announcement. For the couple, it’s personal news. For a queer teenager somewhere who’s never seen two women talk about their marriage as casually as anyone else, it’s proof of a future.
Quick refresher: who’s who
Sophia Bush, 44, played Brooke Davis on One Tree Hill and Detective Erin Lindsay on Chicago P.D. She came out as queer in a Glamour interview in April 2024, the same interview in which she confirmed she was dating Harris.
Ashlyn Harris, 40, is a former goalkeeper who won the FIFA Women’s World Cup with the US in 2015 and 2019, plus three NCAA titles at the University of North Carolina. She announced her retirement in November 2022, according to her Wikipedia biography, which also notes she and Krieger married in December 2019, adopted a daughter in 2021 and a son in 2022, and that Harris filed for divorce in September 2023.
The two were first linked publicly in October 2023, Hoodline notes, and have been together since.
The memoir
The wedding story comes from Bush’s memoir, And I Will Tell You Mine: Notes From a Life in Progress, which comes out on October 27, 2026, Hoodline reported.
Bush has said the book took about a decade. She told People she turned down book deals for years before writing it, and explained the timing simply: “I think when your life finally feels like all the pieces are in the right place, you start to realize why people might want you to share your story.”
Expect it to cover more than the love story. Earlier reporting said the memoir would also address her years on Chicago P.D.
Why this one feels good
A lot of this week’s LGBTQ+ news has been heavy. Newsrooms blocked, rights rolled back, families waiting on courts.
So it’s worth pausing on a different kind of headline: two women, a couple of kids, flowers from the yard in a little girl’s hands, and marshmallows on a summer night. Not a statement. Just a family. That they chose to tell the world, specifically so that kids who are still hiding can see it, is the kind of visibility that actually reaches people.
Congratulations to them both. A year late, but who’s counting.
