US soccer player Korbin Albert, 20, has recently come under fire for liking and sharing “offensive” and “insensitive” social media posts on her TikTok account. The midfielder, who recently joined the U.S Women National Team (USWNT), issued a public apology on her Instagram after facing backlash for her actions.
In her apology, Albert expressed deep regret for her behavior, acknowledging that her actions were immature and disrespectful. She specifically mentioned that she never intended to cause harm or offend anyone with her posts. Albert also emphasized the importance of creating a safe and respectful environment for everyone, both on and off the field, and committed to doing better in the future.
The posts that Albert shared included an anti-LGBTQ+ Christian sermon that condemned being gay and feeling transgender. Additionally, there was a video of Albert and her family declaring that their pronouns are U.S.A during Fourth of July celebrations in 2023. While these posts have since been removed from her TikTok profile, fans captured screenshots of Albert’s likes on Instagram, which included a post mocking Megan Rapinoe’s injury that ultimately ended her football career.
Megan Rapinoe, a prominent LGBTQ+ advocate and Albert’s USWNT teammate, responded to the controversy on her Instagram story. She called out those who use “beliefs” as an excuse for spreading hate and emphasized the importance of creating a more inclusive and supportive environment. Rapinoe also showed solidarity with the LGBTQ+ community and condemned the harmful treatment that many individuals face on a daily basis.
Rapinoe’s statement was shared by several other USWNT players, including Becky Sauerbrunn, Lynn Williams, Sam Mewis, and Kristie Mewis. The collective response from the team highlighted their commitment to promoting inclusivity and standing up against discrimination in all forms.
The incident involving Korbin Albert serves as a reminder of the responsibility that public figures, especially athletes, have in using their platform to spread positive messages and support marginalized communities. While Albert’s apology is a step in the right direction, it is essential for individuals in positions of influence to actively work towards creating a more inclusive and accepting society.
