Two members of the US women’s national team (USWNT) have recently spoken out against their teammate, Korbin Albert, for sharing what they deemed as “offensive” and “insensitive” anti-LGBTQ+ social media posts. The controversy surrounding Albert arose when she shared posts from a Christian worship group discussing the wrongness of being gay and “feeling transgender”. These posts have since been deleted, but the impact of her actions has reverberated within the team.
In addition to these controversial posts, Albert also previously shared videos of her family stating that their pronouns are “USA” during Independence Day celebrations. This behavior did not sit well with her teammates, particularly USWNT striker Alex Morgan and captain Lindsey Horan. The two players addressed the issue at a press conference ahead of the team’s match against Japan, expressing their disappointment and concern over Albert’s actions.
Horan, who plays for Lyon in France, emphasized the importance of upholding the integrity of the national team and ensuring that fans feel heard and seen. She stressed the team’s commitment to maintaining a safe and respectful space, especially for members of the LGBTQ+ community. Morgan echoed these sentiments, highlighting the platform that athletes have to bring attention to important causes and pledging to continue using it for that purpose.
Albert issued an apology at the end of March, acknowledging the hurt she caused and expressing her commitment to doing better. She emphasized the need for everyone to feel safe and respected in all environments, including on playing fields. Despite her apology, the controversy surrounding her actions has sparked internal discussions within the team about how to address the situation moving forward.
Former USWNT player Megan Rapinoe, a two-time World Cup winner who retired from the game last year, also weighed in on the controversy indirectly through an Instagram post. She called out those who hide behind their beliefs and questioned whether their actions contribute to making spaces safer, more inclusive, and better for everyone. Rapinoe emphasized the harmful consequences of hate and urged people to wake up to the impact of their words and actions.
The backlash against Albert’s anti-LGBTQ+ social media posts highlights the importance of inclusivity and respect within sports teams and broader communities. It serves as a reminder of the responsibility that athletes have to use their platforms for good and to advocate for causes that promote equality and acceptance. The USWNT’s response to this controversy underscores their commitment to upholding these values and creating a supportive environment for all members of the team.
