RuPaul’s Drag Race fan-favorite queen, Kim Chi, recently revealed in an interview with People that she was not asked to participate in All Stars 9, despite her eagerness to take part. The latest season of All Stars premiered on May 17th and features a small cast playing for charity, including queens like Shannel and Nina West, but Kim Chi was notably absent from the lineup.
Kim Chi, who launched her beauty brand KimChi Chic in 2022, expressed her disappointment at not receiving an invitation for All Stars 9. She shared that she had been asked to return for every season of All Stars except for the latest one. “What’s really funny is that they’ve asked me back to be on every season of All Stars, and this season is the only [time] they didn’t ask me,” Kim Chi revealed. Despite not being invited, she mentioned that she would have been willing to compete if given the opportunity.
In the absence of her own participation, Kim Chi showed support for her friends Plastique Tiara and Roxxxy Andrews, who are competing in All Stars 9. She also praised fellow Drag Race competitors Sasha Colby and Nymphia Wind for making history as the first Hawaiian and first East Asian queens to be crowned, respectively. Kim Chi highlighted the importance of celebrating diverse cultures within the drag community and beyond, noting the progress made in representation on the show.
Nymphia Wind, the winner of Drag Race season 16, recently had the opportunity to perform in front of Taiwan’s president, Tsai Ing-wen. The performance took place shortly before the pro-LGBTQ+ politician left office, marking a significant moment in drag history. Nymphia performed Lady Gaga’s “Marry the Night” and Taiwanese singer Huang Fei’s “Chase, Chase, Chase” at the event. Reflecting on the experience, Nymphia stated, “This is probably the first presidential office in the world to host a drag show,” highlighting the increasing visibility and acceptance of drag culture globally.
RuPaul’s Drag Race All Stars 9 airs on Fridays on Paramount+ in the US and WOW Presents Plus in the UK and internationally. Despite not being part of this season’s cast, Kim Chi continues to support her fellow queens and advocate for greater diversity and representation within the drag community. As fans eagerly follow the latest season of All Stars, they can look forward to seeing the talent and charisma of queens from various backgrounds shine on the main stage.
