US college basketball player Jared McCain has made headlines after signing a groundbreaking NIL (name, image, likeness) deal with beauty and nail polish brand Sally Hansen. McCain, who currently plays for the Duke Blue Devils, has been turning heads with his bold fashion choices, particularly his painted nails, throughout the basketball season.
In a recent TikTok video posted on Friday, McCain shared his nail painting routine, explaining that it serves as a form of self-care for him. He endorsed Sally Hansen’s insta-dry range of nail polish and revealed that he initially started painting his nails to help curb a habit of biting them.
Despite facing criticism and backlash from some individuals who may not understand or appreciate his personal style choices, McCain remains unapologetic. “There’s really no crazy reason to it – it helps me not bite my nails,” he explained. “I know a lot of people disagree, a lot of people don’t like it. But I’m just gonna be myself and do what I think looks nice.”
McCain also shared that painting his nails has had a positive impact on his performance on the court. “One of the reasons why I kept painting my nails is I had a game after I painted my nails and I ended up playing really well,” he said. “I’m not crazy superstitious, but I thought it looked nice – thought it would help me play better. So far, it’s worked so I’m just gonna keep doing it, I guess.”
McCain’s decision to embrace his personal style comes in the wake of a recent controversy involving college football star Caleb Williams. Williams faced backlash online after he was seen sporting pink lipstick, pink nails, a pink phone, and a pink wallet during a basketball game. The negative comments and homophobic remarks directed at Williams prompted NFL Network host Kyle Brandt to speak out against the hateful rhetoric.
In a passionate rant on social media, Brandt criticized those who ridiculed Williams for his fashion choices and emphasized the importance of acceptance and inclusivity in sports. He called out individuals who perpetuate outdated stereotypes and urged for a more evolved perspective within the sports community.
McCain’s partnership with Sally Hansen signifies a significant step towards breaking down gender norms and promoting self-expression in sports. By proudly showcasing his painted nails and advocating for self-care, McCain is setting an example of authenticity and confidence for athletes and fans alike.
As McCain continues to defy the critics and embrace his unique style, he remains steadfast in his determination to be true to himself. With his new partnership with Sally Hansen, McCain is not only making a statement on the court but also in the realm of fashion and beauty. His unapologetic approach serves as a powerful reminder that individuality and self-expression should be celebrated and embraced in all aspects of life.
