A primary school in Southampton is facing backlash from parents after a transgender supply teacher shared their gender identity with students. Bitterne Church of England Primary School and Southampton City Council have come to the defence of the teacher, stating that they are well-regarded and that the quality of teaching was of a high standard.
The issue arose when Rachel Bennet, a mother of a seven-year-old pupil in the teacher’s class, expressed concerns about the teacher discussing their gender identity with the students. Bennet told the Southern Daily Echo that she found it inappropriate for year-two children to be exposed to such information, as it could be confusing for them. She recounted an incident where the teacher mentioned their gender identity during an English lesson, saying, “If you’re wondering why I’m so gorgeous, it’s because I’ve put makeup on and had a shave.”
In response to the complaints, headteacher Jen Johnson sent a letter to parents and carers addressing the concerns. Johnson clarified that the school was not aware that the supply teacher would be sharing information about their gender identity before teaching lessons. However, she emphasized that the school is tolerant and respectful, and has reaffirmed its expectations for supply teachers moving forward.
A spokesperson for the city council defended the supply teacher, stating that they introduced themselves and briefly addressed questions about their gender before moving on to deliver the lesson professionally. The council emphasized that the supply teacher is well-regarded and that thorough checks are in place to ensure the quality of staff and safeguard students.
The school has a policy of inclusion and has received positive feedback from parents regarding the letter addressing the concerns. Many parents have offered supportive feedback, indicating that the school’s approach to inclusivity is appreciated.
The incident at Bitterne Church of England Primary School highlights the ongoing debate surrounding LGBTQ+ content in schools. Last year, education company Pop’n’Olly faced criticism for allegedly teaching “transgender education” to four-year-old children. However, PinkNews found that these claims were unfounded.
Overall, the situation at Bitterne Church of England Primary School underscores the importance of open dialogue and communication between schools, parents, and teachers when addressing sensitive topics such as gender identity in the classroom. It serves as a reminder of the need for schools to navigate these discussions with care and sensitivity to ensure a safe and inclusive learning environment for all students.
