Trump falsely claims Democrats support ‘execution’ of babies after birth

Former President Donald Trump has once again stirred controversy by repeating a right-wing conspiracy theory that accuses Democrats of supporting the “execution” of babies after birth. In a recent address on his Truth Social media platform, Trump claimed that Democrats are the ones pushing for extreme abortion policies, including support for abortions in the later months of pregnancy and even after birth.
This inflammatory rhetoric is not new for Trump, who has a history of making false and misleading statements about reproductive rights. During his 2019 presidential campaign, he made similar claims at rallies in Texas, Wisconsin, and Florida, suggesting that parents and doctors in America have the option to “execute” babies and accusing Democrats of allowing late-term abortions up until the moment of birth.
However, the reality of abortion practices in the US paints a very different picture. According to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, less than one percent of abortions in 2021 were performed at 21 weeks or later, with the majority being carried out before 13 weeks’ gestation. Dr. Daniel Grossman, a professor of obstetrics and gynecology, emphasized that cases where infants are born alive after attempted abortions are extremely rare and often involve severe fetal anomalies or life-threatening conditions for the pregnant person.
Despite the facts, Trump and his far-right allies continue to perpetuate these baseless claims in an effort to attack reproductive rights and undermine Democratic support on the issue. This smear campaign has been echoed by other prominent figures such as Texas Senator Ted Cruz and Georgia Congresswoman Marjorie Taylor Greene, who have also used extreme language to vilify abortion rights advocates.
In response to Trump’s latest remarks, Biden-Harris 2024 campaign manager Julie Chavez Rodriguez condemned the false accusations as “disgusting and blatantly false,” highlighting the former president’s attempt to distract from his own unpopular policies. The divisive nature of this rhetoric only serves to deepen the political divide on reproductive rights and further polarize public opinion on the issue.
It is essential to separate fact from fiction when discussing sensitive topics like abortion, especially when misinformation can have real-world consequences for individuals seeking reproductive healthcare. By promoting evidence-based information and fostering respectful dialogue, we can work towards a more informed and inclusive society where all voices are heard and respected.
