Los Angeles, CA – The tragic death of Meraxes Medina, a 24-year-old trans Latina, has sent shockwaves through the LGBTQ+ community in Los Angeles. Medina was found dead on the city’s south side on 21 March, her body dumped on the street with a gunshot wound to the head. Friends and family have described her as “an amazing soul” who did not deserve such a violent end.
According to reports from the Los Angeles Times and Advocate, police responded to a call in the early hours of the morning and discovered Medina’s body. While police did not confirm her identity, her loved ones confirmed it was her on a GoFundMe page set up to raise funds for her memorial service. Alisha Veneno, a friend organizing the fundraiser, expressed her grief, stating, “This is my sister, because she was more than just my friend… She didn’t deserve what happened to her.”
The loss of Medina has deeply impacted those who knew her. One friend shared on the fundraiser page, “I’m at a loss for words over your news. I can’t believe it still. You didn’t deserve that. You were an amazing soul. Completely unique in this world. And your makeup skills were unmatched. Your funny and loud personality will be what I am missing most.”
Another friend expressed being “heartbroken for the loss of this beautiful human,” highlighting the impact Medina had on those around her. Medina, who celebrated her 24th birthday in February, worked as a makeup artist at Universal Studios. Tori Cooper, from the Human Rights Campaign’s Transgender Justice Initiative, released a statement honoring Medina’s life and calling for action against gun violence.
“At just 24 years old, she had so much more to give. Yet again, we find ourselves honoring the life and mourning the loss of someone from our transgender community killed by gun violence,” Cooper said. “That alarming reality should emphasize our collective need to fight against lax gun laws.”
The tragic loss of Medina comes just days after another woman, believed to be Cisgender, was fatally shot in the same area. Both deaths are under investigation, leaving the community reeling from the senseless violence that has claimed these lives.
In response to the devastating loss of Meraxes Medina, supporters can donate to her memorial fund through the GoFundMe page set up by her loved ones. As the LGBTQ+ community mourns the loss of a vibrant and talented young woman, calls for justice and action against gun violence grow louder.
The deaths of Medina and the other woman serve as a stark reminder of the dangers faced by transgender individuals and the urgent need for greater protection and support within society. As friends and family continue to grieve the loss of Meraxes Medina, they also vow to honor her memory by advocating for a more inclusive and safer world for all members of the LGBTQ+ community.
