Trailblazing trans teen model Zaya Wade is quickly making a name for herself in the fashion industry, thanks to her stunning looks, open discussion about her trans identity, and flourishing career. The daughter of former NBA player Dwyane Wade and businesswoman Siohvaughn Funches-Wade, Zaya has already gained over 658,000 followers on Instagram, where she frequently shares images of her modeling work.
Zaya’s journey as a transgender individual has unfortunately caused conflict between her father and birth mother. Funches-Wade attempted to legally block Zaya’s name and gender change in 2022, but her efforts were unsuccessful. Despite this opposition, Zaya’s transition has been met with unwavering support from her father and stepmother, actress Gabrielle Union.
Dwyane Wade, known for his successful basketball career with the Miami Heat, met Siohvaughn when he was just nine years old. The couple married in 2022 and had two children together, Zaire and Zaya. However, they divorced in 2007, and Wade eventually obtained full custody of their children in 2011.
Siohvaughn has since become an author, with two books to her name. She also attended Atlanta’s John Marshall Law School and established her own company, The Mediation Matters Firm. Additionally, she owns a real estate investment firm and founded A Women’s Worth Foundation, a non-profit Christian organization that addresses issues impacting women, including domestic violence.
In 2014, Wade married Gabrielle Union, who is best known for her roles in popular teen films from the ’90s and ’00s. The couple now raises a blended family of five children, including their daughter Kaavia James, who was born in 2018.
Zaya publicly came out as transgender in 2020 during an interview on The Ellen DeGeneres Show. Wade shared how his daughter had approached him and Union, expressing her desire to live her truth and be referred to as “she” and “her.” Wade and Union fully supported Zaya’s decision, recognizing the opportunity for her to become a voice for the trans community. They reached out to the cast of the TV series Pose for guidance on how to best support their daughter.
The couple’s support has not gone unnoticed, as they have been vocal advocates for their trans child. However, Zaya’s transition has caused legal conflicts with her mother, Siohvaughn. In 2022, Wade took legal action to protect his daughter from her birth mother’s attempts to prevent her name and gender change. Despite the opposition, Zaya’s legal name and gender change were recognized in 2023.
Wade has been outspoken about the conflict with his ex-wife, refuting her accusations of pressuring their daughter for financial gain. In February 2023, Wade and Union were honored with the President’s Award at the NAACP ceremony for their unwavering support of Zaya. During their acceptance speech, Wade emphasized his role as a facilitator for Zaya’s hopes, wishes, and dreams.
At just 15 years old, Zaya has already made significant strides in the fashion industry. In 2022, she landed a campaign with renowned jewelry brand Tiffany & Co., showcasing her elegance while posing with a gold Tiffany bracelet. In March 2023, she made her runway debut at Miu Miu’s womenswear Fall/Winter show. Zaya shared her experience on Instagram, posting a carousel of content from the show, including a video of her father embracing her with pride.
Alongside her modeling career, Zaya is also gaining recognition as an activist and advocate for trans rights. Her journey serves as a testament to the power of supportive parenting and has inspired many around the world. Zaya Wade is undoubtedly leaving her mark on the fashion industry and paving the way for greater inclusivity and acceptance.
