Team GB and ParalympicsGB have unveiled their new kits for the upcoming Paris 2024 Olympic and Paralympic Games, with a focus on tradition, patriotism, and athlete involvement in the design process. The launch of the new design on social media featured renowned athletes such as Tom Daley, Laviai Nielsen, Lola Tambling, Jazmin Sawyers, Max Whitlock, Bianca Cook, and Livvy Breen.
Tom Daley, a four-time Olympic medallist and Team GB’s most high-profile LGBTQ+ star, posed for the kit launch in both blue tracksuit bottoms and a white T-shirt as well as a pair of blue swim trunks. Daley expressed his pride in representing his country on the biggest sporting stage and his excitement to wear the new kit in Paris this summer alongside his teammates.
The athletes, including Daley, were involved in the design process of the kit, particularly for the sport-specific attire. Daley highlighted the importance of comfort and fit in the design of the kit, especially for diving where precision and performance are crucial. The kit features the colors of the Union Jack and the phrase “Great Britain” in capitals across the front, symbolizing national pride and unity.
Manufacturer Adidas emphasized that the design celebrates the unique aspects of Great Britain and embodies the passion that drives every athlete. The typeface used for “Great Britain” was inspired by British athletes in 1924 and includes a tactile graphic element to enhance the sensory experience for athletes. The Union Jack is prominently featured on the left sleeve of all Team GB and ParalympicsGB tops.
British Olympic Association chief executive Andy Anson praised the kit design for its patriotic elements, stating that it would appeal to traditionalists. The kit’s focus on tradition and patriotism aligns with recent controversies surrounding sports kit designs, such as the multicolored St George’s flag on the collar of the England men’s football kit.
The FA defended the design of the England kit as a tribute to the team that won the World Cup in 1966, amidst criticism from politicians and the public. The unveiling of Team GB and ParalympicsGB’s new kits reflects a continued emphasis on national pride and heritage in sports attire, setting the stage for an exciting and symbolic representation at the Paris 2024 Olympics and Paralympics.
Overall, the new kits showcase a blend of tradition, patriotism, and athlete involvement, capturing the spirit of Team GB and ParalympicsGB as they prepare to compete on the global stage in Paris. The designs reflect a deep sense of national pride and unity, symbolized by iconic British elements such as the Union Jack and the phrase “Great Britain.” With athlete input shaping the performance-specific aspects of the kits, Team GB and ParalympicsGB are poised to make a statement both on and off the field at the Paris 2024 Games.
