Actress Sophia Bush recently announced that she identifies as queer at 41 years old, following speculations about her relationship with soccer player Ashlyn Harris last year. In a piece for Glamour magazine, Bush shared the difficulties she faced during her year-long marriage to entrepreneur Grant Hughes and how she felt trapped and sensed something was wrong.
She also spoke about her love for Harris and clarified that both of them were in the process of divorcing their partners, including Harris’s fellow soccer player Ali Krieger, before starting a relationship together. Despite initial assumptions of infidelity, Bush emphasized the thoughtful and respectful approach they took in handling the situation.
In reflecting on her decision to leave her marriage, Bush explained that it was a long process of soul-searching and difficult conversations. She wanted to dispel any notions of impulsiveness and highlight the careful consideration she put into such a life-changing decision.
Bush shared that she hadn’t considered dating women until she met Harris. Their first date felt surreal and she described a special connection between them. Despite the challenges of coming out in 2024, Bush stressed the importance of being open about her sexuality, especially in a time where LGBTQ+ rights are under attack.
By embracing her identity as queer, Bush found a sense of belonging and happiness within the LGBTQ+ community. She emphasized the importance of living authentically and expressed gratitude for the support and love she has received. Despite the struggles she faced on her journey, she found peace in being true to herself.
Using the metaphor of shedding a weighted vest, Bush spoke about the immense relief and freedom she felt after coming out. She encouraged others to prioritize their own happiness and authenticity, despite fears and uncertainties. By taking that courageous step, Bush believes individuals can find true joy and fulfillment in being their authentic selves.
As Bush enters this new phase of her life with honesty and openness, she hopes to inspire others to embrace their true selves and find self-acceptance. Her story serves as a reminder of the power of self-discovery and the liberation that comes from living authentically.
