Throughout 2023, the LGBTQ+ community and their allies around the world united in a powerful display of solidarity to combat anti-LGBTQ+ violence and fight for justice. From the United States to the United Kingdom, from Italy to Uganda, queer people and their supporters stood up against discrimination and prejudice.
In the United States, a record number of anti-LGBTQ+ bills were introduced, with 75 pieces of legislation becoming law. These bills sought to erode the rights and protections of LGBTQ+ individuals, targeting issues such as transgender healthcare and participation in sports. However, in the face of these attacks, the community rallied together to resist and protest.
Across the pond in the UK, LGBTQ+ rights faced a particular threat from Prime Minister Rishi Sunak and his Conservative Party. The community expressed concern over the state of transgender rights in the country, as hate and discrimination against trans individuals persisted. Despite these challenges, queer people and allies remained steadfast in their support for transgender rights.
In countries like Uganda, Russia, and Italy, right-wing efforts to marginalize LGBTQ+ people were met with resistance. Activists in these nations tirelessly fought back against oppressive policies and attitudes, demanding equal rights and protections for all. They refused to be silenced or ignored, using their voices to amplify the call for change.
Throughout the year, there were several remarkable instances where the LGBTQ+ community and their allies came together in inspiring ways. Here are six examples:
1. More than 100 trans men signed up for Miss Italy after transgender women were banned. When the patron of Miss Italy refused to update the pageant’s rules to be more inclusive, more than 100 trans men defiantly entered the competition. Their aim was to challenge the notion that beauty contests should be limited to cisgender women and to break down the barriers that bigots had erected.
2. Queer furry hackers targeted states’ anti-trans laws. A group of LGBTQ+ furry hackers known as SiegedSex breached agency databases in five states and leaked data as a protest against legislative attacks on the trans community. Their goal was to motivate others to protest and help bring about meaningful change.
3. Hundreds of drag performers and allies marched on the Florida state capitol to protest against the anti-drag bill. Drag performers, LGBTQ+ rights advocates, and allies from across Florida came together in a powerful demonstration against discriminatory legislation. They emphasized that drag performers are valued contributors to society and would not be silenced or erased.
4. Queer activists used London transport ads to support LGBTQ+ Gazans. The Dyke Project hacked 100 Transport for London adverts, replacing them with stories of LGBTQ+ Palestinians. Their aim was to remind the community that liberation is interconnected and that they would not allow their struggle to distract from the oppression faced by others.
5. Australians drowned out anti-trans activist Posie Parker with demands she ‘go home’. When British “gender-critical” activist Posie Parker toured Australia, LGBTQ+ people and allies organized protests to oppose her harmful rhetoric. Demonstrators drowned out her speeches and chanted messages of resistance, making it clear that her views were not welcome.
6. Trans creators raised more than $2 million for gender-affirming healthcare in a TikTok campaign. DIY TikToker Mercury Stardust, alongside fellow creator Jory, raised an astounding amount of money in a livestream for gender-affirming surgeries and donated a significant portion to Point of Pride, an organization that supports trans and non-binary individuals in accessing healthcare.
These examples demonstrate the power of community and collective action in the fight for LGBTQ+ rights. Despite the challenges and setbacks faced throughout the year, queer people and their allies stood strong and united, demanding a better future for all. Their resilience and determination serve as a testament to the ongoing struggle for equality and justice.
