At 38 years old, Harris, a Democrat, is one of the most prominent figures in Nevada politics. She represents District 11 and holds the position of chief majority whip in the Nevada State Senate. Harris is also one of only four openly LGBTQ+ lawmakers in the legislature. She was appointed to her current seat in 2018 and won a four-year term in 2020. Harris is now preparing for reelection in 2024.
Originally from Las Vegas, Harris earned her JD from George Washington University Law School in Washington, D.C. in 2005. She has valuable experience working with the state government through her previous roles as an attorney at the Public Utilities Commission and a pro-bono attorney at the Legal Aid Center of Southern Nevada’s Adult Guardianship Project.
During a recent interview at her district office in Las Vegas, Harris shared her legislative priorities and personal life. She was dressed casually in a grey crew neck sweater and had long dreadlocks, a new look for her after having short hair for many years. Harris was warm and approachable during the interview.
One notable achievement for Harris was co-founding the Nevada Legislature LGBTQ+ Caucus in May 2020. When asked about her goals for passing or blocking bills, Harris spoke about her determination to prevent restrictions on sports participation based on gender identity for elementary school children. She also expressed disappointment over Republican Governor Joe Lombardo’s veto of a bill that aimed to revoke gun rights for individuals convicted of violent hate crimes.
Harris is passionate about education and tech policy and has faced challenges from Republican lawmakers who act as gatekeepers to progress on these issues. She also expressed concerns about the influence of parents’ rights groups on LGBTQ+ youth. Additionally, Harris discussed her interest in artificial intelligence and its potential for both positive and negative impacts.
In the interview, Harris also shared details about her personal life, including her marriage to her wife, Summer Thomas-Harris, a social worker. She talked about their proposal story, which involved a ring pop in the kitchen and a romantic gesture at the HRC gala, showing her warmth and sense of humor.
As a member of the Senate Growth and Infrastructure Committee, Harris emphasized the importance of taking care of the environment to combat climate change. She also revealed her love for tennis and basketball and her favorite Broadway musical, “Rent,” which has nostalgic memories for her from her time as a theatre student at the Las Vegas Academy. Harris also engaged in quick-fire questions about sports, entertainment, and personal preferences.
In conclusion, Harris talked about the most rewarding part of her job as a state senator – the opportunity to listen to her constituents, understand their issues, and work towards solutions. With a genuine dedication to serving her community and advocating for inclusive policies, Dallas Harris continues to make history as a trailblazing lawmaker in Nevada.
As she prepares for reelection in 2024, Harris remains committed to representing her constituents and promoting progressive causes within the state legislature.
