Russell Tovey and Tom Blyth are set to star in a new queer love story titled “Plainclothes,” inspired by true events. Blyth, known for his role as Coriolanus Snow in “The Hunger Games: The Ballad of Songbirds & Snakes,” and Tovey, recognized for his work in “Looking,” “Angels in America,” “Pride,” and the BBC drama “Years and Years,” will lead the cast of the film.
“Plainclothes” will be filmed in Syracuse, New York, and tells the story of an undercover police officer who is tasked with entrapping and arresting members of the LGBTQ+ community in the 1990s. However, as the officer begins to target these individuals, he finds himself unexpectedly drawn to one of the men he is supposed to arrest.
The narrative of “Plainclothes” bears similarities to the actions of the human rights group OutRage!, which protested against the Metropolitan Police for their entrapment of gay men in the 1990s. Last year, the Met acknowledged their past failures in handling LGBTQ+ cases.
The film is written and directed by Carmen Emmi and produced by Arthur Landon, Colby Cote, and Eric Podwall. According to Variety, Landon and Cote expressed their excitement about bringing Emmi’s screenplay to life alongside such a talented cast.
“Tovey has previously discussed how he and others from his generation were deeply impacted by Section 28, a controversial legislation introduced during Margaret Thatcher’s time as Prime Minister. The law prohibited schools and local authorities from promoting homosexuality, and although it was repealed in Scotland in 2000 and across the rest of the UK in 2003, its effects are still felt by many individuals today.
“Plainclothes” promises to explore themes of internal conflict, family dynamics, and the complexities of sexual identity in the face of societal and personal expectations. The film aims to shed light on the struggles faced by LGBTQ+ individuals in the past and present, offering a poignant portrayal of love and acceptance.
As production gears up to begin in Syracuse, audiences can look forward to witnessing Tovey and Blyth bring this important story to life on the big screen. With its powerful message and talented cast, “Plainclothes” is poised to make a significant impact on viewers and spark important conversations about LGBTQ+ rights and representation in media.
