RuPaul Charles, the iconic host of “RuPaul’s Drag Race,” is taking a stand against LGBTQ+ book bans in the United States by launching a colorful and impactful initiative. On 5th March, RuPaul announced the creation of an online book marketplace called Allstora, which he co-founded. In an Instagram post, he expressed his passion for the platform, emphasizing the importance of moving the conversation forward through literature, community, and inclusivity.
Allstora is a platform that supports authors from all backgrounds and amplifies diverse voices. With over 10 million LGBTQ+-friendly titles, the marketplace prioritizes fair fees for women, writers of color, and emerging self-published authors. RuPaul, serving as the Chief Creative Officer, collaborated with LGBTQ+ advocate and best-selling author Eric Cervini, and actor and drag king Adam Powell to bring this platform to life.
In conjunction with the launch of Allstora, the Rainbow Book Bus embarked on its first cross-country tour. This non-profit organization aims to distribute LGBTQ+ literature to underserved communities with limited access to queer books. The initiative comes at a crucial time when book bans targeting LGBTQ+ content are prevalent across the US. The Rainbow Book Bus provides marginalized individuals with the opportunity to see themselves represented in literature and combat censorship.
Adam Powell, a key figure in the Rainbow Book Bus project, highlighted the significance of this initiative in providing inclusive stories to communities in need. The colorful bus serves as a symbol of joy and acceptance, offering a safe space for individuals to explore diverse narratives and combat discrimination.
Despite its noble intentions, Allstora faced criticism shortly after its launch due to the inclusion of books by authors with anti-LGBTQ+ views. Titles from writers such as Riley Gaines, Robby Starbuck, Kirk Cameron, and publications from conservative publisher Brave Books sparked controversy among users. In response to the backlash, Allstora added disclaimers to controversial titles, redirecting proceeds from these books towards protecting diverse literature and marginalized communities through the Rainbow Book Bus.
The company’s stance on censorship is clear, as outlined in their FAQ page. Allstora believes in preserving all perspectives and stories, even those that may contradict their core values. By maintaining an open platform for all books, the marketplace encourages dialogue and critical thinking while relying on community feedback to address problematic content.
Overall, RuPaul’s innovative approach to combating LGBTQ+ book bans through Allstora and the Rainbow Book Bus demonstrates a commitment to inclusivity and diversity in literature. By championing diverse voices and providing access to affirming stories, these initiatives offer a beacon of hope in a landscape marked by censorship and discrimination.
