In the world of entertainment, there are few things as exciting as a rising star breaking through the industry with a fresh new sound and style. This is exactly the case for Priyanka, the winner of Canada’s Drag Race and presenter on We’re Here, who is currently experiencing what her fans are calling her “Renaissance era”. With the release of her new single “No New Friends” last month and the accompanying music video earlier this week, Priyanka is on the cusp of becoming a fully-fledged pop star.
But it’s not just her fans who are taking notice of Priyanka’s musical talent. Little Mix star Jade Thirlwall recently sat down with the drag sensation to give her album the “pop star statement of approval”. In an exclusive interview with PinkNews, Priyanka shared details about her meeting with Thirlwall and the feedback she received on her music.
“Can we talk about when Jade took me out for dinner? It was her and me and her friend, and she listened to my whole album and was giving me notes,” Priyanka revealed. Despite her initial worries that Thirlwall would treat her like a super fan, the Little Mix legend turned out to be “amazing” and the two spent the evening chatting and discussing tunes.
Thirlwall, known for her unwavering support of LGBTQ+ rights and her role as an ambassador for Stonewall, has been vocal about her admiration for drag culture. She has even appeared as a guest judge on Drag Race UK, solidifying her connection to the drag community.
“It’s not performative. It’s so genuine,” Priyanka said of Thirlwall’s allyship. “I feel like she’s just so inspired by the art. She likes my art, and that’s why she would listen to my music. It’s not just: ‘Oh, let me be an ally’, you know what I mean?”
In addition to receiving praise from Thirlwall, Priyanka is also working with some heavy hitters in the music industry to craft her debut album. “I’ve totally flipped my entire team,” she shared. “I’m working with Josh Cumbee, who’s the executive producer of my album, and he is a f**king beast. He’s worked with Olivia Rodrigo. He’s worked with Madonna. He’s worked with Janet Jackson.”
With collaborations with top producers like Scott Hoying of Pentatonix and Damon Sharpe, who has worked with artists like Jennifer Lopez and Kylie Minogue, Priyanka is poised to make a splash in the music scene.
Although some may question whether the world is ready for a drag queen turned pop queen, Priyanka is confident in her abilities. “I’m gonna be the one to do it, b**ch,” she declared. “I’m learning that there’s only space for you if you’re willing to carve it out. The industry is only going to be as ready for it as I am.”
With her new single “No New Friends” already making waves, Priyanka’s journey from drag queen to pop sensation is well underway. As she continues to push boundaries and defy expectations, there’s no telling where her talent and determination will take her next.
