A controversial “Let Women Speak” rally organized by anti-trans activist Kellie-Jay Keen-Minshull, also known as Posie Parker, sparked a substantial counter protest in Edinburgh on April 6. The rally, which aimed to challenge Scotland’s new hate crime legislation, was met with opposition from pro-transgender groups, including Cabaret Against the Hate Speech (CAHS).
Posie Parker, a prominent figure in the anti-trans movement, has a history of incendiary remarks and actions. She first gained notoriety in 2018 when she was questioned by police for tweets targeting Susie Green, CEO of trans charity Mermaids, and her transgender daughter. In these tweets, Keen-Minshull misgendered Green’s daughter and made disturbing references to “castration.”
In recent years, Keen-Minshull has organized anti-trans protests and events in various countries, including the UK, Australia, and the US. She is the founder of Standing for Women, an anti-trans campaigning group that amplifies her gender critical views. Keen-Minshull has faced criticism for aligning herself with far-right figures like Tommy Robinson and Jean-François Gariépy, as well as using controversial imagery like a Barbie doll in a Nazi uniform as her profile picture.
The State of Hate 2023 report by HOPE not hate identified Posie Parker as a leading voice in the anti-trans movement, noting her increasing alignment with far-right ideologies. The report highlighted the overlap in views between Keen-Minshull and the far right, particularly in their focus on trans individuals.
The Edinburgh rally was marred by clashes between supporters of Keen-Minshull’s gender critical stance and pro-trans activists. CAHS, a group dedicated to countering hate speech with music and performance art, played music and banged drums to drown out the chants of the “Let Women Speak” rally attendees. The scene was described as tense and chaotic, with both sides engaging in verbal confrontations and clashes.
Despite facing opposition and criticism from various quarters, Posie Parker remains a divisive figure in the ongoing debate around transgender rights and gender identity. Her rallies and events continue to draw attention and spark controversy, highlighting the deep divisions within society on issues of gender, identity, and inclusivity.
