A long-awaited queer World War One romance film, starring Paul Mescal and Josh O’Connor, has reportedly started filming. The movie, titled “The History of Sound,” is based on a short story by Ben Shattuck and was first announced in 2021.
The story follows young soldiers Lionel (played by Paul Mescal) and David (played by Josh O’Connor) as they navigate both the battlefield and their growing feelings for each other. The film is set to explore their relationship against the backdrop of the war and the changing landscape of America in the early 20th century.
According to a tweet from Film Updates, the adaptation of “The History of Sound” has officially begun filming, although there has been no official confirmation from the production team. Attitude previously reported that filming was scheduled to start in March.
Deadline’s synopsis of the film describes it as a story about two young men who are deeply changed during a brief moment in their lives while exploring the vast landscapes of the United States. The film promises to deliver “deeply soulful performances” from both Mescal and O’Connor, who are considered two of the most promising actors of their generation.
Director Oliver Hermanus expressed his excitement about working with Mescal and O’Connor, stating that the film will tell an unexpected love story that needs to be shared. He highlighted the importance of portraying the bond between two men immersed in the history of sound and American folk music as they navigate their relationship.
Both Mescal and O’Connor have previously portrayed queer characters on screen. O’Connor starred in “God’s Own Country” in 2017, while Mescal recently appeared in “All of Us Strangers” opposite Andrew Scott. In an interview with The Sunday Times, Mescal discussed the responsibility of portraying queer characters respectfully in cinema and emphasized the importance of avoiding offensive stereotypes.
In addition to “The History of Sound,” O’Connor is set to star in the tennis drama “Challengers” alongside Zendaya and Mike Faist. Fans are speculating about the possibility of a queer subplot in the film, which is set to be released in April.
As of now, no official release date has been announced for “The History of Sound.” The film is highly anticipated by fans of Mescal and O’Connor, who are eager to see their performances in this unique and poignant love story set against the backdrop of World War One.
