Olympic swimmer Sean Gunn made headlines recently after coming out as gay in an exclusive interview with OutSports. The Zimbabwean athlete, who competed at the 2016 Olympics in Rio, opened up about his journey to self-acceptance and the overwhelming support he received from his teammates and loved ones.
Gunn revealed that he had initially come out to his teammates at the University of Kentucky before sharing his truth with his family at the age of 27. Reflecting on the experience, he expressed gratitude for the unwavering support he received, stating, “My team, and everyone who did know, was very supportive and happy for me. I honestly don’t think anything changed at all. In my head, I built it up for so long and was terrified that the way they acted or treated me would be different. But I was really lucky: everyone was amazing and wanted me to be the happiest version of myself.”
Now 30 years old and living in South Africa with his boyfriend, Gunn emphasized the importance of being surrounded by love and acceptance. He shared, “As someone who did struggle with coming out and only [did so] at 27 to my family, it makes me happy to be surrounded by friends and family and so much love, and am really grateful for them all.”
Gunn’s Olympic journey was a significant milestone in his life, with the swimmer competing in the 100-metre freestyle event at the Rio Games and setting a national record at the time. Recalling the emotional experience of walking into the stadium during the opening ceremony, Gunn said, “I couldn’t believe I was there, surrounded by so many people I had looked up to and admired for years. I had dreamed of going to the Olympics since I was a little kid, and the whole time I was there I had to keep reminding myself that this is real life.”
After retiring from competitive swimming a year post-Olympics, Gunn transitioned to running but maintained his love for the sport. Despite the challenges he faced along the way, Gunn’s resilience and determination served as a reminder that he could achieve anything he set his mind to.
In recent years, there has been a growing trend of LGBTQ+ athletes coming out in various sports, signaling a shift towards greater acceptance and inclusivity in the sporting world. Research has shown that fans are more welcoming of the LGBTQ+ community than ever before, with initiatives like Stonewall’s Rainbow Laces campaign playing a crucial role in promoting diversity and representation in sports.
A study revealed that 74 percent of 12 million sports fans who saw the Rainbow Laces campaign in 2022 considered LGBTQ+ people to be an integral part of the sporting community, marking an increase from 68 percent the previous year. This positive shift underscores the progress being made towards creating a more inclusive and supportive environment for LGBTQ+ athletes in sports.
Sean Gunn’s story serves as a powerful reminder of the importance of authenticity and self-acceptance in pursuing one’s dreams. As more athletes like Gunn continue to share their stories and inspire others, the landscape of sports is evolving to embrace diversity and celebrate individuality. The journey towards greater inclusivity in sports is ongoing, but each step taken towards acceptance brings us closer to a more equitable and welcoming athletic community.
