Olivia Rodrigo’s recent decision to halt the distribution of emergency contraception at her GUTS World Tour has sparked controversy and disappointment among reproductive health advocates. Just days ago, the singer was lauded for promoting awareness and access to reproductive healthcare by allowing abortion organizations like Right by You to distribute the morning-after pill, condoms, and information to concert attendees.
However, according to sources cited by Variety, Rodrigo’s team intervened and instructed the groups not to distribute emergency contraception such as Plan B, condoms, and lubricant at future tour stops. The reason given was that children were present at the concerts and the team was concerned about the media attention surrounding the distribution of contraceptives.
Despite this setback, the organizations are still permitted to attend the tour and provide information and promotional materials like T-shirts and badges. Reproductive health groups have expressed disappointment over the sudden change of heart, emphasizing that the distribution of contraceptives is legal in all 50 states.
Jade Hurley, communications manager for the DC Abortion Fund, highlighted the importance of access to birth control and emergency contraception for young people. Destini Spaeth, chair of the Prairie Abortion Fund, echoed this sentiment, emphasizing the positive impact of ensuring young individuals have access to contraceptives when needed.
The Missouri Abortion Fund, one of the organizations previously involved in distributing emergency contraception at Rodrigo’s shows, posted on social media about their commitment to abortion access despite the recent developments. The packages handed out at the St. Louis show included a card advocating for funding abortion and a QR code linking to abortion access information and the Missouri Abortion Fund.
Prior to embarking on her tour, Rodrigo launched Fund 4 Good, an organization dedicated to supporting reproductive health freedom for women, girls, and individuals seeking such services. The fund supports non-profit organizations that focus on education, reproductive rights, and preventing gender-based violence. A portion of ticket sales from Rodrigo’s tour were donated to the fund, and she also partnered with the National Network of Abortion Funds for her USA concerts.
The decision to halt the distribution of emergency contraception at Rodrigo’s tour has raised questions about reproductive rights and access to healthcare. Advocates continue to push for comprehensive reproductive health services and emphasize the importance of ensuring that individuals have access to necessary resources. As the tour continues, the debate over reproductive rights and access to contraception is likely to remain a topic of discussion within both the music industry and the broader community.
