Olivia Rodrigo, the popular singer-songwriter known for hits like “Vampire,” has once again proven her commitment to promoting reproductive health care and awareness. During her recent GUTS World Tour stop in Missouri, where abortion is banned with very limited exceptions, Rodrigo made emergency contraception available to her fans.
The Right by You organization was invited by Rodrigo to distribute free emergency birth control, condoms, and abortion information to attendees of her concert in St. Louis on March 12. Fans were able to receive a package that included two boxes of Julie emergency contraception, similar to the well-known Plan B pill, which can help prevent pregnancy if taken within 72 hours of unprotected sex. The package also included a card with the message “Funding abortion? It’s a good idea, right?” and a QR code linking to abortion access information and the Missouri Abortion Fund.
The Missouri Abortion Fund took to social media to express their gratitude for Rodrigo’s support, referencing some of her lyrics and emphasizing their commitment to providing abortion access in a challenging environment. Rodrigo had previously launched Fund 4 Good, an organization dedicated to supporting reproductive health freedom for all individuals, including women, girls, and people seeking reproductive rights.
Fund 4 Good works with community-based non-profit organizations that focus on education, reproductive rights, and preventing gender-based violence. A portion of the ticket sales from Rodrigo’s tour was donated to the fund, and she also partnered with the National Network of Abortion Funds for her USA concerts.
Fans who support reproductive rights have praised Rodrigo for her efforts, with some affectionately calling her “mother” for giving people the choice to decide whether or not to become parents. Many fans have expressed admiration for Rodrigo’s pro-choice stance and her advocacy for reproductive health freedom.
It is important to note that emergency contraception like Plan B does not terminate a pregnancy but instead works by delaying or preventing ovulation, thereby preventing pregnancy from occurring. Despite the challenges posed by the overturning of Roe v. Wade, Rodrigo’s actions highlight the importance of providing access to reproductive health care in states like Missouri where abortion access is severely restricted.
In conclusion, Olivia Rodrigo’s decision to make emergency contraception available at her Missouri tour demonstrates her commitment to promoting reproductive health care and supporting individuals’ right to make choices about their own bodies. By partnering with organizations like Right by You and Fund 4 Good, Rodrigo is using her platform to advocate for reproductive rights and raise awareness about the importance of access to essential healthcare services.
