Renowned actor Olivia Colman has recently spoken out against the gender pay gap in the film industry, highlighting the disparity between male and female actors. During promotions for her latest movie, “Wicked Little Letters,” the Oscar-winning star expressed her frustration with the outdated notion that male actors are bigger box office draws, leading to higher pay for men.
In an interview with CNN’s Christiane Amanpour, Colman emphasized that the belief that men attract more audiences is no longer valid, yet it continues to be used as a justification for paying women less. She bluntly stated, “Male actors get paid more because they used to say they draw in the audiences and actually, that hasn’t been true for decades. But they still like to use that as a reason to not pay women as much.”
Colman further highlighted the stark difference in earnings between male and female actors, pointing out a specific instance where there was a staggering 12,000% pay gap. While she did not disclose the details of the project in question, her remarks shed light on the pervasive issue of unequal pay based on gender in the entertainment industry.
The acclaimed actor also addressed double standards regarding women’s behavior, noting that there is often shock or judgment when women swear compared to men. She asserted, “If a woman swears, people act shocked. F*** off! Women are human – funny, filthy, loving, caring – just like men.”
In her latest role as Edith Swann in “Wicked Little Letters,” Colman delves into the true story of the Littlehampton poison-pen scandal of 1923, where residents received threatening and obscene letters. Known for her versatile performances, Colman has portrayed a range of characters, including Queen Elizabeth II in “The Crown,” Queen Anne in “The Favourite,” and Nick’s supportive mother in the heartwarming series “Heartstopper.”
Despite playing several maternal roles, Colman’s portrayal of Nick’s mother in “Heartstopper” stands out for its empathy and understanding towards her son’s journey of coming out as bisexual. Creator Alice Oseman expressed her astonishment at having Colman on board, praising the actor’s nuanced and heartfelt performance in the series.
Colman’s impressive body of work has earned her critical acclaim and accolades, including an Oscar for Best Actress in “The Favourite.” She has been recognized with multiple Academy Award nominations for her roles in films such as “The Father” and “The Lost Daughter.”
As Colman continues to advocate for gender equality and fair treatment in the film industry, her outspoken stance serves as a reminder of the ongoing challenges faced by women in Hollywood. By using her platform to address issues of representation and pay parity, she sparks important conversations and pushes for greater inclusivity in the entertainment world.
