An investigation is underway following the tragic death of non-binary teenager River Nevaeh Goddard, who was found deceased at the age of 17 in Stow, Massachusetts. The discovery was made by authorities responding to a welfare check request at the residence of Goddard’s boyfriend, Shane Curry. The circumstances surrounding Goddard’s death have raised concerns and shed light on the challenges faced by LGBTQ+ youth in today’s society.
Curry, 20, has been arrested and charged with assault and battery on a household or family member, as well as assault and battery causing serious bodily injury. Court documents reveal that Curry was diagnosed with schizophrenia in 2020, prompting questions about his mental health and its potential impact on the events leading to Goddard’s death. The delay in gaining access to Curry’s home, where Goddard’s body was found, raises further questions about the situation and the response of authorities.
Goddard, who identified as non-binary and used both the names River and Nevaeh, had been reported missing in April 2022. The teenager was known to use she/her and they/them pronouns and identified as pansexual. Goddard’s family members have described her as a kind and spiritual person, despite facing adversity from a young age. Born in prison and having spent time in foster care, Goddard’s upbringing was marked by challenges, including running away from guardians in Rhode Island.
Michael Simmons, Goddard’s grandfather, expressed shock and disbelief at the tragic turn of events. He recounted his conversations with Curry, who had promised to take care of Goddard. Simmons highlighted Goddard’s compassionate nature and spiritual depth, emphasizing the loss felt by those who knew her. The family’s grief is compounded by the awareness of Goddard’s struggles and the difficulties she faced throughout her life.
In response to the news of Goddard’s death, GLAAD president and chief executive Sarah Kate Ellis expressed deep sorrow and called for greater support for LGBTQ+ youth. Ellis emphasized the need for improved protection and resources for young people, particularly those who may feel marginalized or unsupported. She called on leaders and communities to prioritize the safety and well-being of all individuals, urging an end to discriminatory practices and harmful rhetoric.
The tragic death of River Nevaeh Goddard is a sobering reminder of the challenges faced by LGBTQ+ youth and the importance of creating safe and inclusive environments for all individuals. As investigations continue into the circumstances surrounding Goddard’s passing, it is essential to reflect on the systemic issues that contribute to such tragedies. By advocating for equality, acceptance, and support for marginalized communities, we can work towards a more just and compassionate society for all.
