The second trailer for the highly anticipated period drama, “Mary & George,” has been released, and it’s even queerer than fans anticipated. The limited series stars Nicholas Galitzine and Julianne Moore in leading LGBTQ+ roles, promising a captivating and scandalous story.
In the series, Galitzine portrays the “beautiful and charismatic” George Villiers, Duke of Buckingham, who seduces King James VI of Scotland and I of England, played by Tony Curran. George is maneuvered by his mother, Mary Villiers, Countess of Buckingham, portrayed by Julianne Moore, to become King James’ “all-powerful lover.” Together, they hope to rise up the ranks and become two of England’s most influential people.
Mary is a cunning countess who will stop at nothing to seize power from King James. The series is based on an “outrageous” and “unapologetic” true story that follows Mary’s journey as she marries her way up the ranks, bribes politicians, colludes with criminals, and claws her way into the heart of the Establishment.
In the new trailer, Mary’s desperation for power becomes evident as she reveals that she owns no home, her children are unwed, and she effectively has nothing. She is warned that if this becomes known, her position in society will become untenable. Determined to secure her place among the King’s most trusted peers, Mary instructs her son to give the king whatever he wants.
As Mary and George’s plan to take control of the king intensifies, it becomes clear that they are both willing to do whatever it takes to acquire power. In one scene, Galitzine is seen flipping Curran around as though he’s about to top him, fulfilling the king’s desires. Meanwhile, Julianne Moore is shown engaging in a passionate lesbian kiss, further emphasizing her willingness to turn on anyone to achieve her goals.
With The Stooges’ “I Wanna Be Your Dog” playing in the background, George declares their plan a triumph, exclaiming, “I have the power, I have the king, I have England.” The trailer hints at a world full of monsters, and Mary admits that she quite likes danger, setting the stage for a thrilling and scandalous series.
“Mary & George” also features an impressive ensemble cast, including Nicola Walker, Niamh Algar, Trine Dyrholm, Sean Gilder, Adrian Rawlins, Samuel Blenkin, Rina Mahoney, and more. The series is written by DC Moore, known for “Killing Eve,” and directed by Oliver Hermanus.
Fans can look forward to the premiere of “Mary & George” on Sky Atlantic and streaming service NOW on March 5th. With its provocative storyline, talented cast, and stunning visuals, the series promises to be a must-watch for fans of period dramas and LGBTQ+ narratives alike.
