Ncuti Gatwa, known for his role in “Sex Education” and upcoming appearance in “Doctor Who,” is set to take on a new challenge in the National Theatre adaptation of Oscar Wilde’s “The Importance of Being Earnest.” The play is scheduled to open on November 20th and run until January 25th, 2025.
Gatwa will portray Algernon Moncrieff, a wealthy bachelor with a penchant for idleness, in the comedic play. He will be joined by Hugh Skinner, best known for his roles in “The Witcher” and “Fleabag,” who will play the lead character, Jack Worthing. The cast also includes Sharon D Clarke, Amanda Lawrence, and Richard Cant in supporting roles.
The production will be directed by Max Webster, an Olivier and Tony-Award-winning director known for his work on stage adaptations such as “Life of Pi.” “The Importance of Being Earnest” is considered one of Oscar Wilde’s most notable plays, but it also marked the beginning of his downfall.
First performed in 1895, the play led to Wilde’s imprisonment for gross indecency after he sued the Marquess of Queensberry for libel. The trial exposed Wilde’s homosexuality, ultimately leading to his tragic demise. Despite the controversy surrounding its creator, “The Importance of Being Earnest” remains a classic in the world of theatre.
As Gatwa prepares for his role in the play, fans of “Doctor Who” can look forward to the new season, set to premiere in a few weeks. Showrunner Russell T Davies has teased exciting developments for the series, promising “good stuff” in the upcoming season. The first two episodes are scheduled to drop on BBC iPlayer on Saturday, May 11th.
Tickets for “The Importance of Being Earnest” will go on sale on May 23rd, offering audiences the chance to see Gatwa and the rest of the talented cast bring Wilde’s timeless comedy to life on stage. Don’t miss this opportunity to witness a modern interpretation of a classic play by one of the most celebrated playwrights in history.
