On April 3, Broadway will witness the electrifying presence of two powerhouse actors, Jim Parsons and Jessica Lange, on stage together in the play “Mother Play” by Paula Vogel. Joining them is Tony-award winning actress Celia Keenan-Bolger, making this a star-studded cast that promises to deliver a gripping performance.
The casting of Parsons, Lange, and Keenan-Bolger seems like a match made in heaven. Parsons, known for his role in “Big Bang Theory,” is openly gay, while Lange, although not a member of the LGBTQ+ community herself, is considered a queer icon. On the other hand, Keenan-Bolger’s sister Maggie is queer, adding another layer of representation to the cast.
The play “Mother Play” delves into queer themes, a common thread in many of Vogel’s works. Set in 1962, the story follows the matriarch Phyllis (played by Lange) as she tries to control the lives of her children, Carl (Parsons) and Martha (Keenan-Bolger), in their new apartment in Washington D.C. The play explores family dynamics, past traumas, and the complexities of relationships in a bitingly funny and honest manner.
Lange, who plays the chaotic and controlling mother Phyllis, expressed her excitement about the role, calling it “everything” she had been looking for. Working closely with Vogel, Lange highlighted the freedom they had to explore and discover the nuances of their characters, making the process both challenging and rewarding.
As both siblings in the play are queer, their bond becomes a source of strength in dealing with their overbearing mother. Lange explained how the shifting family dynamics create tension within the family unit, adding depth to their interactions on stage.
Paula Vogel, the playwright behind “Mother Play,” is a lesbian herself. Married to Anne Fausto-Sterling, Vogel infuses her personal experiences into her work, drawing inspiration from her own life and family. The play is loosely based on Vogel’s relationship with her brother Carl, who tragically passed away from complications related to AIDS. This personal connection adds a layer of authenticity and emotional depth to the story.
Vogel’s dedication to LGBTQ+ rights and representation is evident in her body of work. From “The Baltimore Waltz” to “Mother Play,” Vogel’s plays often explore queer themes and challenge societal norms. Her commitment to providing opportunities for young artists to explore uncharted territories is a testament to her advocacy for inclusivity in the arts.
“Mother Play” is set to premiere at the Helen Hayes Theatre in New York City from April 3 to June 16. Tickets are available for purchase through 2nd Stage, with prices ranging from $109 to $269. Don’t miss this historic production featuring an all-star cast and a story that promises to captivate audiences with its raw emotion and powerful performances on stage.
