A parent’s support for their LGBTQ+ child is invaluable, especially in states like Texas where queer youth are actively targeted. Recognizing the importance of this support, a group of dedicated mothers have formed a network called Mama Bears, using their unconditional love as a call to arms.
The term “mama bear” was coined for a reason. Female bears are known for their fierce protection of their cubs and will attack anything that poses a threat to them. This name couldn’t be more fitting for a nationwide network of parents fighting to change hearts and minds and combat the rising tide of anti-LGBTQ+ legislation.
Liz Dyer, the founder of Mama Bears, explains that she didn’t intentionally choose the name for the group. Instead, it naturally evolved as the network grew from a private Facebook group of around 150 mothers of LGBTQ+ kids in 2014 to nearly 39,000 members today. The term “mama bear” signifies a mother who fiercely protects her children while also providing love and support.
In 2007, Dyer became a mama bear herself when her son came out as gay. As an active member of her Southern Baptist church, she initially believed being gay was wrong. However, her love for her son led her to question these beliefs and seek answers in the Bible. Through her own studies, she realized that the verses used to condemn LGBTQ+ people did not apply to her son’s desire for love and family with someone of the same gender.
Dyer’s journey to acceptance didn’t end there. She actively sought out LGBTQ+ individuals and listened to their stories. She discovered a community that embraced affirming theology, which acknowledges that being LGBTQ+ is natural and encourages individuals to live authentically as their true selves. These individuals were thriving in all aspects of their lives when connected to an affirming community.
Fully supporting and affirming her gay son became a no-brainer for Dyer. She understood the importance of building inclusive communities, especially as conservative lawmakers and right-wing groups continue to target the LGBTQ+ community. In 2022, Dyer stood at the steps of the Texas state capitol building when Governor Greg Abbott spread misinformation about gender-affirming healthcare, equating it to child abuse. Dyer and other Mama Bears actively fight against such harmful rhetoric and legislation.
The Mama Bears firmly believe that their presence is needed in Republican-led states like Texas. They refuse to be silenced and are determined to show up, speak out, and let LGBTQ+ individuals know they have support. Dyer acknowledges that the current wave of anti-LGBTQ+ legislation and rhetoric is scary and serious, but the Mama Bears use their voices with intention and persistence to combat hate.
Building a strong community is a fundamental aspect of Mama Bears’ work. They connect with other mothers of LGBTQ+ youth, family members who support queer kids, and allies. Through sharing their stories, showing up at events, offering hugs and encouragement, they provide a safe and affirming space for LGBTQ+ individuals and their families.
To further support the LGBTQ+ community, Mama Bears has established a non-profit arm that provides financial assistance to other organizations working towards LGBTQ+ equality. They also offer support for holiday gatherings and even have stand-in moms for same-gender weddings. Additionally, they have a project that delivers handmade blankets to queer teens and adults who need a reminder that someone cares.
Despite the challenging landscape for LGBTQ+ youth in the US, Dyer remains hopeful. She has witnessed the growing number of people fighting for LGBTQ+ youth and believes that love will ultimately prevail. The Mama Bears’ unwavering support is a testament to the power of parental love and acceptance in creating a safer and more inclusive world for all.
