Fans of Taylor Swift have been buzzing with excitement over her latest release, “The Tortured Poets Department,” which dropped on April 19th. However, one listener might not be as thrilled about the new album, as The 1975 frontman, Matty Healy, has responded to what some believe to be a “diss track” aimed at him.
In a video that went viral online, Healy was caught on camera walking past paparazzi in Los Angeles on April 24th, where he was asked about the alleged “Taylor diss track.” The singer-songwriter chuckled before responding, “My diss track? Oh! I haven’t really listened to that much of it, but I’m sure it’s good.”
While the specific song in “The Tortured Poets Department” that is considered Healy’s “diss track” was not named in the video, fans have speculated that multiple songs on the album, and even in Swift’s entire discography, could be inspired by the British musician. Songs like “Fortnight” featuring Post Malone and “The Smallest Man Who Ever Lived” are among those believed to possibly reference Healy.
The surprise double album is rumored to be based on Swift’s past relationship with Healy, which came to light in May 2023. However, their romance seemed to have ended by July of the same year, according to reports. References to Healy can also be found in lyrics from songs like “Guilty as Sin?” where Swift mentions someone sending her a synth-pop song by The Blue Nile, Healy’s self-proclaimed favorite band of all time.
Fans have also started to connect the dots between Swift’s previous songs and her relationship with Healy. The pair first met in 2014 and sparked romance rumors when they were spotted wearing each other’s album merch T-shirts. However, their relationship never materialized as Swift began dating Calvin Harris.
In her track “Death By A Thousand Cuts,” Swift’s lyrics mirror those of The 1975’s “Me & You Together Song,” hinting at a shared emotional experience between the two artists. Healy confirmed at a concert in April 2023 that the song was inspired by true events, just before rumors of their relationship began circulating.
Swift’s cryptic messages in her songs like “Cardigan” from “Folklore” and references to Peter Pan in tracks like “Peter” on “The Tortured Poets Department” have led fans to believe that her songs may have been about Healy all along. Healy himself has compared himself to Peter Pan in interviews over the years.
With the release of “The Tortured Poets Department,” fans are delving deeper into Swift’s music to uncover possible references to her past relationship with Healy. As the speculation continues, it remains to be seen how Healy will respond further to the alleged “diss track” and how this new era of Taylor Swift’s music will unfold.
