In March 2023, conservative activist Billboard Chris, whose full name was Chris Elton, found himself at the center of a violent incident at a trans rights rally in Vancouver, Canada. The incident was captured on video footage, which showed Elton being approached by a trans woman while he appeared to be peacefully protesting the rally.
The encounter quickly escalated as the trans woman began shouting profanities at Elton. Despite the verbal attacks, Elton maintained his composure. However, the situation took a violent turn when the woman physically assaulted Elton by shoving him and dragging him by his clothes. Police swiftly intervened to de-escalate the situation.
Elton claimed that the police did nothing to help him, but this statement was proven false by the officers present at the scene. They stated that both parties were at fault for the altercation. While it is understandable that marginalized communities may resort to violence due to their suffering and pleas for change being dismissed, it is essential to recognize that such actions only fuel the rage of conservatives and result in more passionate and violent attempts to strip away LGBTQ+ rights.
As we enter a new year, anti-LGBTQ+ pundits and activists continue to find new and creative ways to attack the rights of LGBTQ+ individuals. In Florida, for example, Republicans introduced a bill that seeks to criminalize LGBTQ+ content under the guise of making “lewd or lascivious grooming” a second-degree felony punishable by up to 15 years in prison. Similarly, in Ohio, proposed regulations could force even trans adults in the state to detransition.
While there have been some victories in the fight against these draconian laws, such as the overturning of Arkansas’s gender-affirming care ban for trans youth and the declaration of Tennessee’s drag ban as unconstitutional, it is crucial for the LGBTQ+ movement to constantly evaluate and improve its strategies. Our opponents continuously refine their tactics, and it is essential for us to consider how we can do better.
On Martin Luther King, Jr. Day, it is worth reflecting on his philosophy of nonviolent resistance, which can provide guidance to any movement seeking social change. King’s approach was inspired by the teachings of Gandhi, who emphasized love and nonviolence as the ideal methods for achieving reform. King led the Montgomery bus boycott with unarmed bodyguards despite threats on his life, and he responded to the bombing of his home with compassion.
King’s philosophy of nonviolence had six principles, as outlined in his book “Stride Toward Freedom.” It emphasized resisting evil without violence, seeking to win the understanding and friendship of opponents, opposing evil itself rather than the individuals committing evil acts, being willing to suffer without retaliation, avoiding both physical and internal violence, and having faith in the future and the ultimate triumph of justice.
Research supports the effectiveness of nonviolent protests. Harvard Professor Erica Chenoweth found that civil resistance campaigns are four times larger than violent campaigns, allowing for greater representation of diverse groups. Nonviolent resistance also has a higher chance of garnering more support and ultimately achieving its goals.
While nonviolent protests have their disadvantages, such as potentially receiving less media attention or provoking violence from the opposition, choosing nonviolence is still the most effective strategy. Violence can scare away allies and reinforce biases held by conservatives. Peaceful protests foster conversation, empathy, and support, creating a louder collective voice that is harder to ignore.
One striking example of the power of peaceful protests was seen in June 2020 during a silent march for Black trans lives in Brooklyn, New York. Approximately 15,000 people attended the march, which was described as one of the most remarkable demonstrations since the killing of George Floyd. The demonstration showcased the attention and power that peaceful protests can bring to marginalized communities.
In conclusion, the assault on conservative activist Billboard Chris at a trans rights rally in Vancouver highlights the need for nonviolent resistance in the LGBTQ+ movement. While violence may sometimes seem justified in the face of oppression, it ultimately perpetuates a cycle of violence and further undermines the fight for equal rights. Following the philosophy of nonviolent resistance, as advocated by Martin Luther King, Jr., has proven to be more successful and can lead to lasting change.
