Far-right US Representative Marjorie Taylor Greene has once again found herself embroiled in controversy, this time attempting to rally HIV activists against Dr Anthony Fauci, the renowned infectious disease expert. In a social media post, Greene demanded that Fauci answer questions about his role in gain of function research, COVID-19 lockdowns, vaccines, and his financial gains from vaccine production. However, her attempt to enlist the support of HIV activists is particularly ironic considering her long history of anti-LGBTQ+ and HIV-phobic remarks.
Dr Fauci, who served as the head of the National Institute of Allergy and Infectious Diseases (NIAID) and Chief Medical Advisor to President Joe Biden, has faced relentless attacks from conservative politicians throughout the Covid-19 pandemic. These attacks stem from his recommendations to wear face masks, practice social distancing, and promote the FDA-approved Covid-19 vaccine. Unfortunately, this constant targeting of Fauci and his family by right-wing pundits resulted in a significant security risk.
While Greene may hope to mobilize anti-vaxxers against Fauci, her attempt to garner support from HIV activists is deeply misguided. Dr Fauci played a pivotal role in leading the US through the AIDS crisis in the 1980s, taking actions that many government officials were unwilling to take in order to protect the LGBTQ+ community. He was instrumental in the creation of the President’s Emergency Plan for AIDS Relief (PEPFAR), which has saved over 25 million lives in the developing world according to the US Department of State.
Ironically, PEPFAR faced threats of termination last year when far-right Republicans, including Greene, threatened to shut down the government if their demands were not met. This contradiction highlights Greene’s lack of genuine concern for AIDS activists and the LGBTQ+ community as a whole.
Furthermore, Greene’s history of HIV-phobic comments further diminishes her credibility in attempting to rally support from HIV activists. In a tweet from 2021, she complained about the NBA’s decision to require players to be vaccinated against Covid-19, comparing it distastefully to allowing HIV-positive player Magic Johnson to compete. This comparison is deeply flawed, as HIV and Covid-19 are entirely different viruses with distinct modes of transmission.
Greene’s attempts to rally AIDS activists against Dr Fauci are not new. Last year, she reposted a tweet that falsely claimed gay liberal activists had blamed Fauci for blocking affordable and effective AIDS treatments and promoting expensive and toxic drugs that benefited pharmaceutical companies. However, the storming of the National Institutes of Health (NIH) in 1990, which activists blamed Fauci for, was largely a result of misinformation and misunderstandings about his role in public AIDS treatment.
While Fauci provided valuable information on preventing the spread of AIDS and conducted extensive research on the virus, he had limited control over the speed at which clinical trials and treatments were developed. Activists wrongly believed that Fauci was blocking progress, leading to their frustration and anger towards him.
In a documentary released in 2021, Fauci expressed his disappointment at being wrongly targeted by activists. He emphasized that scientists and physicians genuinely care about those affected by diseases like AIDS, and it is devastating for them to be falsely accused of neglecting their patients.
Marjorie Taylor Greene’s attempt to rally HIV activists against Dr Anthony Fauci is not only misguided but also hypocritical. Her long history of anti-LGBTQ+ and HIV-phobic comments undermines any credibility she may hope to have with these communities. As Dr Fauci continues to work tirelessly to combat infectious diseases and protect public health, it is essential to recognize his significant contributions to the fight against AIDS and his unwavering dedication to saving lives.
