US politician Marjorie Taylor Greene is facing a backlash after being accused of spreading “sensationalist fiction” in a series of anti-abortion posts on social media.
Republican representative Greene, known for her controversial statements in the past, sparked outrage online with her recent posts about abortion on Twitter. In one post, she claimed that abortion providers are “ripping” organs out of “babies born alive” to conduct experiments on them. She also shared information from a right-wing account, allegedly from anti-abortion medic Dr. Theresa Deisher.
In another post, Greene mentioned a disputed claim that anti-abortion activists were given 115 aborted fetuses from a medical waste company, along with an image of the alleged remains. People on Twitter called out Greene for spreading “sensationalist fiction,” “lies,” “propaganda,” “fear-mongering,” and statements lacking any truth.
Critics described Greene’s posts as a “disinformation fiesta” designed to distort public perception with falsehoods and fear-mongering. This is not the first time Greene has faced backlash for spreading conspiracy theories and incendiary comments online.
Conservative efforts to restrict reproductive rights have been on the rise, especially following the Supreme Court’s decision to overturn Roe v Wade. In recent years, there have been attempts to cut federal funding for Planned Parenthood and impose abortion bans in various states.
In 2015, Republicans launched a congressional investigation into Planned Parenthood based on videos alleging illegal profiting from aborted fetal tissue. However, an investigation found no evidence to support these claims. Democrats on the oversight and accountability committee have pushed back against unfounded anti-abortion allegations.
In 2022, anti-abortion activists Terrisa Bukovinac and Lauren Handy claimed to have taken 115 fetal remains from a medical waste company. They buried some remains and kept others as evidence in Washington DC. The medical waste company denied their account, and police confirmed that the fetuses were aborted legally.
Handy was later found guilty of breaking federal law by blockading an abortion clinic in 2020. Greene has a history of making controversial statements and spreading conspiracy theories online, leading to her being stripped of her committee assignments in 2021.
She has cast doubt on accounts of the 9/11 attacks, made remarks about “Jewish space lasers,” and claimed that doing CrossFit workouts provided COVID-19 protection. Greene has also made outlandish claims about the extinction of straight people and blamed a tampon shortage on transgender individuals.
Greene’s responses to deadly school shootings in Tennessee and Texas have also been criticized. Her latest anti-abortion posts have once again stirred controversy and drawn condemnation from online critics who accuse her of spreading sensationalist fiction and fear-mongering.
In conclusion, Marjorie Taylor Greene’s history of controversial statements and conspiracy theories continues to attract attention and criticism. Her recent anti-abortion posts have reignited debates about reproductive rights and the spread of misinformation online. Critics are calling for accountability and fact-checking in response to Greene’s sensationalist claims.
