Country singer and LGBTQ+ advocate Maren Morris has recently found herself under fire from bigots who are criticizing her for supporting the drag community and allowing her son to do the same. Morris, who previously apologized for country music’s historically poor relationship with its queer fans while guest judging on season 15 of RuPaul’s Drag Race, appeared on The Kelly Clarkson Show to discuss her LGBTQ+ advocacy and her decision to take her son to a drag show.
During her appearance on the show, Morris opened up about her involvement in a benefit at the Bridgestone Arena in March 2023 to protest against Tennessee’s ban on drag performances. The event, called Love Rising, featured performances by artists like Hozier, Hayley Williams, and Brittany Howard, all coming together to oppose the state’s regressive ban on drag shows. On stage at Love Rising, Morris boldly demanded that Tennessee officials arrest her after proudly revealing to the crowd that she had introduced her son to a drag queen.
Morris shared with Clarkson that her son enjoys watching her sit in the makeup chair and is fascinated by the colors, making it a harmless and enjoyable experience for him. She also praised drag as an incredible expression of artistry and emphasized the importance of normalizing the art form. Morris mentioned that she has never hesitated to bring her son along to her shows as he is always with her on the road.
Despite her good intentions, Morris faced backlash from critics who questioned her inclusive approach to parenting. In response, she took to her Instagram story to address the criticism, pointing out that drag is a centuries-long performance art and that some performances are specifically for adults. She clarified that the performance she referenced in her interview was a charity all-ages show aimed at protesting the unjust drag ban in Tennessee.
Morris’ powerful response seems to have silenced the haters, at least for now. In 2023, the “Texas” singer made headlines when she announced her decision to leave country music, citing the heightened homophobia and transphobia within the industry during the “Trump years.”
In conclusion, Maren Morris continues to be a vocal advocate for LGBTQ+ rights and representation, standing up against bigotry and discrimination in all its forms. Her unwavering support for the drag community and her commitment to inclusive parenting serve as a reminder of the importance of acceptance, understanding, and celebrating diversity in all its forms.
