Police in Bristol, UK are currently on the lookout for two individuals believed to be involved in a violent homophobic hate crime that took place outside an LGBTQ+ friendly Irish bar in the city. The incident occurred in the early hours of January 30, when a man in his 20s was subjected to a brutal assault that left him with serious injuries, including a broken nose, eye socket, and cheekbone, as well as a split eyebrow. The victim had to be rescued by his friends and was hospitalized due to the severity of his injuries.
According to a report by the BBC, the victim and his partner were enjoying a night out at the bar when they were targeted by the perpetrators. The attackers ripped a pride flag from the victim’s boyfriend’s hand and proceeded to stomp on it, while hurling homophobic slurs at the couple. The situation quickly escalated, resulting in both men being physically assaulted. The victim described the incident as blindsiding and stated that he was left with horrific bruising as a result of the attack.
Following the incident, the victim expressed his concerns about the prevalence of homophobia in society, stating that he had always felt safe and accepted in his home city of Bristol until this incident occurred. He shared his fear of being recognized while out in public and voiced his disappointment at experiencing such violence in a place he had considered his sanctuary.
One suspect has already been identified in connection with the attack, but authorities are still seeking information to identify the other two individuals involved. A CCTV image of the suspects was shared on social media platforms in an effort to gather more leads and progress the investigation. Avon and Somerset Police are urging anyone with information about the perpetrators to come forward and assist in bringing them to justice.
