Footballer Bethany England recently opened up about the impact of homophobia on her life, revealing that she and her partner still refrain from holding hands in public due to the potential negative reactions from others. The England Lioness star, who was named the Women’s Super League Player of the Year for the 2019-2020 season, has been a prominent figure in women’s football, representing the Lioness squad at major tournaments like the World Cup and the Euros.
Bethany England is one of several LGBTQ+ players on the team, including her girlfriend Stephanie Williams, who plays for Oxford United. Despite being open about their relationship on social media and sharing affectionate images online, England admitted in an interview with the BBC that they avoid public displays of affection due to the fear of judgment and stares from strangers.
In her own words, England expressed her discomfort with the constant scrutiny and attention they receive when they are out together. She mentioned how people staring makes her question if they are looking at her, her partner, or both of them as a couple. This constant awareness of being observed has led them to refrain from holding hands in public, as Stephanie doesn’t want to make others uncomfortable and feels sad that she has to consider the opinions of strangers.
Despite accepting her sexuality and being open about her relationship, England confessed that she went through a period of shame before coming to terms with her identity. She realized she was gay in 2014 when same-sex marriages became legal in the UK, marking a significant moment of self-discovery for her. Since then, she has been an advocate for LGBTQ+ rights and visibility in sports.
Before joining Tottenham Hotspur last year, Bethany England had played for several clubs, including Doncaster Rovers Belles, Liverpool, and Chelsea. Her talent and dedication to the sport have earned her a place in the England senior squad, where she has made valuable contributions on the field. Alongside her, fellow out international teammates Leah Williamson and Beth Mead were recognized in the 2023 New Year Honours List for their achievements in football.
Bethany England’s story sheds light on the challenges faced by LGBTQ+ individuals in sports and society as a whole. Despite progress in acceptance and representation, there are still lingering issues of homophobia and discrimination that impact the daily lives of queer individuals. By sharing her experiences and speaking out about the struggles she faces, England is raising awareness and advocating for a more inclusive and accepting world for all.
