Lil Nas X, the chart-topping rapper behind the hit song “Old Town Road,” is no stranger to controversy. And now, he’s once again making headlines with his latest announcement: he plans to release Christian music. But not everyone is convinced of his sincerity.
Last week, Lil Nas X took to social media to reveal his new direction in music, stating that he had “rejoined Christianity.” He even shared a snippet of a new song, seemingly titled “Angels,” and captioned the video with, “Y’all mind if I enter my Christian era?”
However, the response from religious followers has been mixed, to say the least. A search through TikTok reveals a number of videos from hardcore Christians criticizing the rapper for supposedly mocking their religion. Many point to his controversial 2021 single “Montero (Call Me By Your Name),” which featured a music video that depicted Lil Nas X giving the devil a lap dance.
One Christian rapper in particular, Bryson Gray, has taken aim at Lil Nas X with a diss track. Gray refers to the rapper as a “gay demon” and uses religious homophobia to allege that Lil Nas X is trying to “turn your kids into homosexuals.” While Gray has his share of loyal followers who appreciate his work, his diss track was met with criticism from Lil Nas X fans.
But Lil Nas X is not one to back down from a fight. In response to Gray’s diss track, he tweeted, “I made one snippet about wanting god to give me hope a few days ago and already like 5 Christian rappers have conceptualized, wrote, recorded, and shot music videos in their grandma’s basements for diss songs about me. We really back.” It seems that Lil Nas X is taking the backlash in stride and even finding humor in it.
Another artist, Tyson James, also released a diss track targeting Lil Nas X. In the song, James raps, “I’ma fight these homos” and “God don’t play that homo mess.” Lil Nas X fired back, tweeting, “No way u at the big age of 57 years old went into the studio wrote, produced, recorded, and shot a music video for an ass diss song to me because of a snippet i posted 9 hours ago. i really got yall on a leash.”
The backlash against Lil Nas X’s turn to Christian music seems to stem from deep-rooted homophobia within Christianity. But Lil Nas X is not letting that deter him. He has taken to social media multiple times to defend his decision. In one tweet, he said, “Making Christian music does not mean I can’t suck d**k no more.” He also addressed the criticism of his various artistic expressions, stating, “Y’all see everything I do as a gimmick. In reality, I’m just an artist expressing myself in different ways.”
Lil Nas X has also debunked claims that the backlash is related to his “Montero (Call Me By Your Name)” music video. In a post on X, he fact-checked those accusing him of being a satanist, stating, “The devil is mentioned ONE time throughout my entire last album and the line is ‘tell the devil i wont have him inside, i know everything’s gonna be alright’. y’all have spent this entire last week rewriting history over me releasing a snippet.”
Despite the controversy surrounding his new direction, Lil Nas X remains unfazed. He is eagerly preparing for this new era in his music career, and fans can expect more boundary-pushing and thought-provoking content. So whether you’re a fan or a critic, one thing is for sure: Lil Nas X knows how to make waves in the music industry.
