Cardiff has been chosen to host the EuroGames in 2027, marking the first time the LGBTQ+ event has been held in the UK. This decision comes after Pride Sports Cymru, an LGBTQ+ sports development and inclusion organization, successfully secured the bid to bring Europe’s largest LGBTQ+ sporting event to the Welsh capital.
The EuroGames, governed by the European Gay and Lesbian Sport Federation, was first held in The Hague in The Netherlands in 1992. This year’s event is set to take place in Vienna, Austria, in July. However, all eyes are now on Cardiff as up to 10,000 athletes, including transgender sportsmen and women, are expected to descend on the city in 2027.
The announcement has been met with widespread praise from LGBTQ+ sportspeople and organizations alike. In an interview with the BBC, Duncan Cameron, the chairperson of Cardiff Lions – Wales’ first gay and inclusive rugby union club – expressed his excitement over the event, stating that it will offer a “huge benefit to raise the profile of inclusive sport.” Neil Roberts from the LGBTQ+ inclusive badminton club, the Cardiff Red Kites, also highlighted the importance of the games in promoting a culture where everyone can enjoy sports regardless of their background.
Charlotte Galloway, the chairperson of Cardiff Dragons – Wales’ first mixed-gender LGBTQ+ football club – emphasized the significance of the EuroGames in providing a platform for trans-inclusive sports in Wales and the UK. She noted that the event allows gender-non-conforming, trans, and non-binary individuals to compete authentically, showcasing that sport is for everyone.
The sentiment was echoed by other LGBTQ+ sports enthusiasts, including Jess Williams from Pride Sports team, who emphasized the transformative impact a EuroGames in Wales could have on the LGBTQ+ community. The legacy and opportunity for positive change that the event presents are seen as enormous, with hopes for a more inclusive and welcoming sporting environment.
Lou Englefield, director of Pride Sports Cymru, expressed delight at bringing a EuroGames to Wales, noting it as a significant opportunity to highlight Wales’ commitment to becoming a more LGBTQ+-friendly nation. The chief executive of the Welsh Sports Association, Andrew Howard, congratulated Pride Sports Cymru on their successful bid, acknowledging the event as a celebration and awe-inspiring showcase of inclusive sport.
The decision to host the EuroGames in Cardiff in 2027 represents a major milestone for LGBTQ+ inclusion in sports in the UK. With athletes from across Europe set to converge on the city, the event is poised to not only showcase top-tier sporting talent but also promote diversity, acceptance, and equality within the sports community.
In conclusion, the selection of Cardiff as the host city for the EuroGames in 2027 signifies a significant step forward for LGBTQ+ inclusivity in sports. The event promises to be a groundbreaking moment for both athletes and spectators alike, showcasing the power of sport to unite individuals from diverse backgrounds under the common goal of athletic excellence. As preparations for the event get underway, all eyes will be on Cardiff as it prepares to make history as the first UK city to host this prestigious event.
