In late March 2023, the town of Seekonk, located in Massachusetts and with a population of 15,700, became embroiled in a controversial situation surrounding LGBTQ+ issues. This began when the Mildred H. Aitken Elementary School advertised an annual Boy’s Choice mother-son dance that was welcoming to all boys, students who identify as boys, and non-binary students. The ad caused outrage among some residents, leading to threats of protests and violence on social media.

In response, two local parents, Kris Lyons and Pam Godsoe, formed a group called Love Lives in Seekonk (LLIS) to educate the community about LGBTQ+ issues and provide support for queer youth in schools. However, another resident formed a similarly named group, Luv Lives in Seekonk, in an attempt to mock and discredit LLIS.

The situation escalated when the founder of Luv Lives in Seekonk made false accusations and threats of violence against LLIS. As a result, the school district canceled both the Boy’s Choice dance and the scheduled Girl’s Choice dance due to safety concerns.

Despite facing challenges, LLIS continued their advocacy work by fundraising for the school’s parent-teacher organization and hosting community events promoting inclusivity and acceptance. The conflict between LLIS and Luv Lives in Seekonk intensified as the latter spread misinformation and made baseless claims. The local news magazine, The Seekonk Reporter, also became involved by publishing letters from both groups, leading to accusations of bias and censorship.

As tensions within the community heightened, supporters of both groups took sides in the upcoming townwide elections. Conservative candidates who opposed LGBTQ+ inclusion gained support from like-minded residents, while LLIS members remained dedicated to advocating for LGBTQ+ rights and creating a safe environment for queer youth in Seekonk.
