Richard Armitage, the talented LGBTQ+ actor, is set to embark on a thrilling new adventure in ITV’s upcoming drama series, “Red Eye.” The six-part drama promises to keep viewers on the edge of their seats as Armitage’s character, Dr. Matthew Nolan, finds himself entangled in a high-level conspiracy during a deadly flight from Heathrow Airport to Beijing.
The story kicks off with Dr. Nolan being arrested by DC Hana Li, portrayed by Jing Lusi, upon his return from China. As he is escorted back to Beijing on a late-night flight, known as a red eye, DC Li begins to suspect foul play when a mysterious death occurs onboard. With further deaths confirming that Nolan is in danger, DC Li finds herself caught up in an escalating conspiracy after a call from MI5.
Meanwhile, back in London, Hana’s sister Jess, played by Jemma Moore, is running her own investigation into Nolan’s extradition and finds herself targeted by an unknown assassin. At the same time, the head of MI5, Madeline Delaney (Lesley Sharp), takes risks to help Hana and Nolan stay alive and expose an international conspiracy involving China and elements within the British government.
Armitage’s portrayal of Dr. Matthew Nolan comes at a time when the actor has been more open about his sexuality. Having come out to those close to him as a teenager, Armitage has chosen to focus on his work rather than his personal life. He remains hesitant to label himself and is open to the possibility of evolving feelings in the future.
With a diverse range of acting credits under his belt, including roles in popular series like “Spooks” and “Robin Hood,” as well as blockbuster films like “The Hobbit,” Armitage has proven his versatility as an actor. His portrayal of complex characters like Lucas North and Thorin Oakenshield has earned him a dedicated fan base and critical acclaim.
In recent years, Armitage has continued to push boundaries with roles in projects like Netflix’s “Obsession,” where he played a London surgeon entangled in a forbidden affair, and the Harlan Coben thriller “Fool Me Once,” where he portrayed a murdered husband who seemingly returns from the dead.
As “Red Eye” gears up for its highly anticipated premiere on ITV1 and ITVX, fans can expect another riveting performance from Richard Armitage as he delves into the dangerous world of high-stakes conspiracies and deadly flights. Stay tuned for an action-packed ride with one of the UK’s most talented actors at the helm.
