In a shocking revelation, Labour MP Chris Bryant has shared that he is undergoing cancer treatment for a second time after the disease made a return. The MP for Rhondda, Wales, had previously undergone treatment for skin cancer in 2019 and has now disclosed that he is undergoing further treatment after cancer was discovered in his lung.
Bryant took to Twitter on the morning of Monday, 13 May, to update his followers after the cancer was removed. He expressed optimism about his chances of being completely cancer-free, stating that they are “really, really good”. Bryant, who was one of the few openly gay MPs when he was first elected in 2002, shared a video in honor of Melanoma and Skin Cancer Awareness Month, recounting how his husband had noticed an unusual mole on the back of his head over five years ago.
Upon having the mole examined, Bryant found out that it was melanoma, stage three, and was given a 40 percent chance of survival for a year. After a year of treatment, his chances improved, and he remained cancer-free for the past five years until the cancer reappeared in his lung in January. Bryant credited immunotherapy, the treatment he is currently on, for his hopeful outlook on being completely cancer-free in the next decade or so.
Immunotherapy utilizes the immune system to combat cancer by aiding it in recognizing and attacking cancer cells, as explained by Cancer Research UK. Bryant emphasized the importance of taking skin cancer seriously, urging everyone to regularly check moles and protect themselves from the sun. In a subsequent post, Bryant shared candid photos showing his mole before and after surgery, emphasizing the need to defeat skin cancer.
In December of last year, Bryant expressed feeling less safe in the UK as a gay man compared to three years ago. He attributed this sentiment to the rhetoric used by equalities minister Kemi Badenoch, who informed MPs about a revised blacklist of over 50 countries where transitioning was deemed too easy, causing LGBTQ+ individuals across the country to feel unsafe.
Known for his advocacy for LGBTQ+ rights, Bryant received praise in 2022 for his insightful response to a caller on LBC who asked him to define “woman” amid comments from Tory leadership contenders Liz Truss and Rishi Sunak questioning trans identities. Bryant empathetically acknowledged individuals who feel the need to transition and condemned politicians who exploit trans identities for divisive purposes.
In conclusion, Chris Bryant’s journey with cancer and his unwavering commitment to LGBTQ+ advocacy serve as an inspiration to many. His resilience in the face of adversity and his dedication to raising awareness about skin cancer and LGBTQ+ rights are commendable. As he continues his fight against cancer, Bryant remains a beacon of hope and strength for all those facing similar challenges.
