Kristen Stewart, the acclaimed actor known for her roles in films such as Twilight and Happiest Season, has recently shared her perspective on the vampire romance saga that shot her to global stardom. In an interview with Variety, Stewart labeled Twilight as “such a gay movie” when she looks at it in hindsight.
Stewart, who identifies as queer, has become increasingly involved in LGBTQ+ films in recent years, with projects like Happiest Season and Love Lies Bleeding. However, when reflecting on her earlier work before coming out, she acknowledges the presence of obvious gay undertones in Twilight.
The Twilight Saga, consisting of five parts, starred Stewart alongside Robert Pattinson and Taylor Lautner. While Stewart admits that the gay subtext may not have been intentional at the outset, she believes that her presence in the film contributed to its simmering gay elements. She states, “I mean, Jesus Christ, Taylor and Rob and me, and it’s so hidden and not OK. I mean, a Mormon woman wrote this book. It’s all about oppression, about wanting what’s going to destroy you. That’s a very Gothic, gay inclination that I love.”
Stewart publicly came out as bisexual in 2017 during her hosting gig on Saturday Night Live. In her opening monologue, she addressed then-president Donald Trump, who had previously tweeted about her and her relationship with Pattinson. Stewart declared, “Donald, if you didn’t like me then, you’re really probably not going to like me now because I’m hosting SNL – and I’m, like, so gay, dude.” The moment received thunderous applause from the audience and made headlines worldwide.
Reflecting on the aftermath of her coming out, Stewart admits surprise that her sexual orientation garnered such attention. She had been openly dating her girlfriend for years before publicly acknowledging her queerness. She says, “It wasn’t even like I was hiding. I was so openly out with my girlfriend for years at that point. I’m like, ‘I’m a pretty knowable person.'”
While Stewart was taken aback by the public’s delayed realization of her queerness, she also found relief in the revelation. Having faced uncomfortable and intrusive comments about her sexual identity, she questioned why people were attempting to skewer her. She recalls thinking, “‘Why are you trying to ruin my life? I’m a kid, and I don’t really know myself well enough yet.’ The idea of people going, ‘I knew that you were a little queer kid forever.’ I’m like, ‘Oh, yeah? Well, you should honestly have seen me f*** my first boyfriend.'”
Today, Stewart proudly embraces her identity and has become a role model for the LGBTQ+ community. Her openness about her own journey encourages others to come out confidently. She shares a lighthearted sentiment, saying, “Every single woman that I’ve ever met in my whole life who ever kissed a girl in college is like, ‘Yeah, I mean, me too.’ I’m constantly joking with my girlfriend. I’ll be sitting there and be like: ‘She’s gay too. Everyone’s gay.'”
Stewart acknowledges that coming out has not only benefited her fans but has also allowed her to join the wider LGBTQ+ community and embrace her true self. She expresses her desire to be part of a community that supports and understands one another, stating, “I would like to be on that team because we need each other. I didn’t want to be left out anymore. It was this whole world that I didn’t realize I could explore.”
Kristen Stewart’s candid reflection on Twilight as a “gay movie” offers insight into the evolution of both the film industry and her personal journey. As she continues to take on diverse roles and advocate for LGBTQ+ representation, Stewart’s impact as an influential figure in the community only grows stronger.
