In a groundbreaking move, Keir Starmer, the leader of the Labour Party, has pledged to introduce a trans-inclusive conversion therapy ban if Labour wins the next general election. LGBTQ+ activists have praised Starmer for his commitment to tackling the “psychologically damaging abuse” faced by transgender individuals.
Conversion therapy, a widely discredited practice, refers to attempts by anti-LGBTQ+ groups or individuals to forcibly change a person’s sexuality or gender identity. It is important to note that such attempts are not only ineffective but also harmful.
Speaking to LGBT+ Labour on Tuesday, Starmer stated, “We’ll implement a full, trans-inclusive ban on all forms of conversion therapy.” He emphasized that conversion therapy is a form of psychological abuse and affirmed Labour’s full support for protecting the rights and well-being of vulnerable LGBTQ+ individuals.
Nick Baldwin, the co-ordinator of LGBT Humanists, commended Starmer’s promise, stating, “Banning conversion therapy is not only a matter of legal necessity but also a moral imperative. It sends a clear message that the rights, dignity, and safety of LGBT people should be protected in law.”
The commitment to ban conversion therapy was first made by former Prime Minister Theresa May five years ago. However, progress on this issue has been slow. Therefore, LGBTQ+ activists are encouraged by Starmer’s dedication to finally address this urgent matter.
Jayne Ozanne, the founder of the Ban Conversion Therapy Coalition, expressed her satisfaction with Starmer’s pledge. She particularly highlighted the importance of protecting trans individuals, who are at higher risk of experiencing harmful practices. She clarified that the ban would not prevent parents, teachers, or religious leaders from having important conversations with those in their care. Instead, it would put an end to practices conducted by those with a predetermined mindset who deny the validity of someone’s gender identity or sexual orientation.
Ozanne further criticized the fear-mongering tactics employed by those who advocate for the continuation of harmful practices. She argued that such tactics only put lives at risk for political gain and will be viewed unfavorably by the electorate.
However, it is worth noting that Starmer has faced criticism in the past for his stance on trans rights. Last year, he reversed the party’s commitment to self-identification for trans people and instructed Labour MPs to abstain on a gender reform bill proposed by the SNP. Additionally, he referred to a woman as an “adult female,” which some interpreted as a failure to acknowledge the complexities of gender identity.
Interestingly, Starmer’s announcement comes shortly after one of his senior colleagues, shadow health secretary Wes Streeting, suggested housing trans patients in separate hospital wards rather than ones corresponding to their gender identity. This proposal has sparked debate within the LGBTQ+ community, with some arguing that it may perpetuate discrimination and isolate transgender individuals further.
In parliament on Monday, Starmer promised to crack down on all categories of hate crime, ensuring that those found guilty face longer jail sentences. He vowed to strengthen the law so that every category of hate crime is treated as an aggravated offense. Furthermore, he expressed his intention to modernize the Gender Recognition Act, following Scotland’s recent reform bill allowing trans individuals to obtain legal recognition without requiring a medical diagnosis.
Despite these promises, some critics argue that Labour has been moving away from its voter base on transgender rights under Starmer’s leadership. Data journalist Ell Folan claimed last August that the party’s stance on transgender rights has become increasingly out of touch.
As the next general election approaches, it remains to be seen if Starmer’s promise to ban conversion therapy and protect the rights of transgender individuals will resonate with voters. However, LGBTQ+ activists remain hopeful that this commitment will lead to meaningful change and create a safer and more inclusive society for all.
