In a powerful statement released on Friday (29 March), President Joe Biden officially proclaimed March 31 as Transgender Day of Visibility, reaffirming his administration’s commitment to transgender rights. The proclamation highlighted the extraordinary courage and contributions of transgender Americans and emphasized the nation’s dedication to equality for all individuals.
“Transgender Americans are part of the fabric of our nation, serving their communities, raising families, and contributing to the thriving of America,” the statement read. It emphasized that transgender individuals deserve the same rights and freedoms as every other American, including the fundamental freedom to be their true selves.
The proclamation also condemned the actions of extremists who have proposed discriminatory laws targeting transgender kids and their families. It called out the attacks on basic American values such as the freedom to be oneself, make healthcare decisions, and raise children. Additionally, it addressed concerning issues such as rising suicide rates among transgender youth and the epidemic of violence against transgender women and girls, particularly those of color.
The proclamation comes at a time when hate crimes based on gender identity are on the rise. A 2023 report by civil rights group The Leadership Conference on Civil and Human Rights revealed a nearly 30% increase in reported hate crimes targeting transgender individuals from 2020 to 2021. The study also highlighted that a small but well-funded group of proponents of bigotry and hate have been successful in turning hate into campaign platforms.
In a recent development, civil rights group the Southern Poverty Law Center added Chaya Raichik, founder of Libs of TikTok, to their hate watchlist, labeling her as an anti-LGBTQ+ extremist. The account has been known for spreading conspiracy theories and misinformation about the LGBTQ+ community, sparking hate and harassment campaigns against various individuals and institutions.
President Biden’s proclamation coincides with controversy surrounding Transgender Day of Visibility falling on Easter Sunday this year. Some right-wing critics have expressed anger over this timing, claiming that the day was intentionally scheduled to coincide with Easter. However, it is essential to note that Transgender Day of Visibility is a movable feast day that can fall on any Sunday between March 22 and April 25.
Despite the backlash, the Fairfax County Board of Supervisors in Northern Virginia unanimously voted to proclaim their support for Transgender Day of Visibility. They were accused of “hijacking Easter” by critics, but the board stood firm in their support for transgender rights.
In his closing remarks, President Biden sent a message to all transgender Americans, assuring them that they are loved, heard, understood, and belong in America. He reiterated his administration’s commitment to supporting transgender individuals and condemned the un-American attacks targeting them.
The proclamation serves as a significant step in recognizing and honoring the transgender community’s resilience and contributions while advocating for their rights and protection against discrimination and violence. President Biden’s unwavering support for transgender rights sends a powerful message of inclusivity and equality for all Americans.
