Is Regina George actually a lesbian? Well, actress and star of the new Mean Girls remake Reneé Rapp has been dropping some serious hints on social media. As if viewers weren’t excited enough for the Mean Girls remake – based on the 2018 Broadway musical adaptation of the original 2004 film – Reneé Rapp, who is reprising her Broadway role as Regina, has made several hints that she will be playing the lead plastic as queer.
In her first hint at Regina’s sexuality, she not-so-subtly captioned several behind-the-scenes photos of the film’s set on Instagram, “Regina George was a lesbian”, which predictably drove fans wild. The post quickly garnered thousands of likes and comments from fans speculating about Regina’s sexual orientation.
In December, 24-year-old Rapp dropped a single for the film with none other than Megan Thee Stallion, playing on the iconic Mean Girls quote: “It’s not my fault you’re, like, in love with me or something!” The song, titled “In Love With Me”, received rave reviews from fans and critics alike. But it was the lyrics that really caught the attention of queer fans, with Rapp singing in the second verse: “Get her number, get her name/ Get a good thing while you can/ Kiss a blonde, kiss a friend/ Can a gay girl get an ‘Amen?'”. These lyrics further fueled speculation about Regina’s possible queer storyline in the remake.
In an interview with Teen Vogue, Rapp seemed to confirm that Regina George would be “very gay” – if not directly in the storyline, then at least in vibes – as well as describing the character as a “likeable b*tch”. Rapp’s portrayal of Regina as a queer character would be a significant step forward in LGBTQ+ representation in mainstream media.
Interestingly, Rapp herself is queer in real life. The US actor came out as bisexual in interviews, revealing that she was “so scared” to come out and had previously “beat myself up” over her identity due to internalized homophobia. However, she has since embraced her sexuality and has been vocal about the positive impact it has had on her life. “It has improved my quality of life beyond belief,” she said about coming out publicly. “I’m so fortunate in this regard because I don’t deal with a tonne of homophobic s**t compared to my other friends who are very visibly queer. People can be so f**king mean.”
The Mean Girls remake is highly anticipated by fans of the original film and the Broadway musical alike. Directed by Tina Fey, who also wrote the screenplay for the original film, the remake promises to bring a fresh take on the beloved story of high school drama and teenage cliques. With Rapp’s portrayal of Regina George potentially adding a queer twist to the character, it will undoubtedly bring a new layer of complexity and representation to the story.
Mean Girls is set to hit theaters in the US on Friday, January 12, and in the UK on January 19. Fans of the original film and newcomers alike will have the chance to see Reneé Rapp’s take on Regina George and decide for themselves if the character’s sexual orientation adds a new dimension to the story. Regardless of whether Regina is explicitly shown as a lesbian or if it is merely hinted at, Rapp’s portrayal is sure to be impactful and resonate with LGBTQ+ viewers.
In conclusion, while it remains to be seen if Regina George will be explicitly portrayed as a lesbian in the Mean Girls remake, actress Reneé Rapp has dropped several hints that suggest a queer storyline for the character. Rapp’s own queerness adds an extra layer of authenticity to her portrayal, and fans are eagerly awaiting the film’s release to see how Regina’s sexuality is explored. With LGBTQ+ representation becoming increasingly important in mainstream media, the Mean Girls remake has the potential to make a significant impact and provide much-needed visibility for queer characters and actors.
