On March 1st, 2024, a significant event unfolded in Atlanta, Georgia. Damita Bishop, a well-known advocate for criminal, social, and economic justice reform, announced her intention to run for the United States House of Representatives. In spite of bad weather, Bishop’s supporters gathered at Liberty Plaza to show their support and recognize her as a powerful force in the fight for justice.
Bishop, a Black woman with a gay son, has devoted her life to addressing the injustices present in the criminal legal and prison systems. With a deep understanding of the interconnected nature of oppression, she emphasizes the importance of unity in tackling systemic injustice.
The U.S. criminal legal system has faced criticism for its disproportionate impact on LGBTQ+ individuals, especially those of color. Statistics show that LGBTQ+ adults are incarcerated at a rate three times higher than the general population, and trans individuals, particularly Black trans people, face even greater disparities.
Despite facing obstacles such as a lack of political support and financial resources, Bishop remains unwavering in her commitment to reforming this broken system. With more than twenty years of experience as a human rights advocate, she has witnessed the human rights violations within the prison industrial complex, specifically within the Georgia Department of Corrections (GDC).
The GDC has faced allegations of misconduct, including reports of assault and murder within its facilities. Recent cases, such as the denial of gender-affirming care to a trans woman incarcerated in a men’s prison, highlight the urgent need for accountability and transparency within the system.
Bishop’s decision to run for office is driven by her desire to hold the current system accountable and inspire others to push for meaningful change. Despite facing challenges like police harassment and sabotage of her events, she remains determined in her mission to bring about justice for marginalized communities.
As Bishop leads the fight towards a more just and equal future, her courage and determination serve as an inspiration for those yearning for change. The sense of solidarity present in her actions and words resonates with those who stand with her, highlighting the power of collective voices in driving progress.
As the rain falls over Liberty Plaza and Bishop’s words reverberate in the air, it is evident that her message of resilience and determination in the face of injustice deeply resonates with those striving for a better future. Through her candidacy and advocacy work, Bishop embodies the unwavering spirit of those who refuse to accept the status quo and strive for a fairer society for all.
