Welsh activist and lead singer of post-punk band Idles, Joe Talbot, recently made an appearance on CBeebies Bedtime Stories, where he read a bedtime story to families across the UK. Talbot, who identifies as bisexual, expressed his excitement at being part of the programme, calling it an “honour.”
The episode, which aired on Tuesday (20 February), featured Talbot reading “Under the Love Umbrella” by Davina Bell. The story follows four children who navigate the world, protected by the love of their family. Talbot joins a list of celebrities who have previously appeared on CBeebies Bedtime Stories, including Dave Grohl, Dolly Parton, Harry Styles, and Ed Sheeran.
In addition to his musical career with Idles, Talbot’s appearance on CBeebies Bedtime Stories coincides with the release of the band’s latest album, “Tangk.” In an interview with The Guardian, Talbot shared that the album has a surprisingly emotionally vulnerable tone, influenced by his experiences of parenthood.
“When you become a parent, you’re in charge of this very vulnerable thing,” Talbot said. “Suddenly, you’re accountable for someone else’s well-being and that makes you soften. It makes you think more. You become more mindful of your language, more mindful of everything.”
Idles is known for their outspoken lyrics on topics such as toxic masculinity and misogyny. Talbot explained that he is interested in writing about empathy and communion as a tool to address societal issues. He views these themes as humane rather than purely political.
Talbot’s appearance on CBeebies Bedtime Stories adds to a list of LGBTQ+ stars who have featured on the show, including Elton John and cricketing couple Nat and Katherine Sciver-Brunt. Elton John previously read “The Dog Detectives: Lost in London” by Fin and Zoa Gypsy, while Nat and Katherine read Emily Coxhead’s “Find Your Happy.”
Overall, Talbot’s guest appearance on CBeebies Bedtime Stories was met with enthusiasm from fans and viewers alike. His unique perspective as a musician and activist added a fresh dynamic to the programme, showcasing the importance of diversity and representation in children’s media.
