A crowdfunding appeal has been launched to help a 29-year-old Black trans woman who lost both her legs after allegedly being thrown onto NYC subway tracks by her boyfriend.
The incident, which took place at the Fulton St. station in Brooklyn, has shocked the community and raised concerns about the safety of transgender individuals, especially those of color. The victim, who remains unnamed, suffered severe injuries including the amputation of both her legs, fractures to her ribs, and a blood clot in her lungs.
According to a statement from the New York City District Attorney, the victim and her boyfriend were at the station when the man is said to have thrown her towards the oncoming downtown train. The police found the woman under the train when they arrived at the scene.
In an interview with trans activist Hope Giselle, the victim shared her harrowing experience from her hospital bed. She explained that she was on her way to a gender-affirming appointment when she got into an argument with her boyfriend. She tried to signal for help by making eye contact with bystanders and looking up at surveillance cameras, but her attempts were unsuccessful.
The suspect, identified as Christian Valdez, fled the scene but was later arrested by the NYPD in Brooklyn. A GoFundMe campaign has been set up to help cover the victim’s medical expenses, and at the time of writing, over $47,000 has been raised out of a $75,000 target.
The description on the crowdfunding site highlights the traumatic nature of the incident and the urgent need for accessible housing and future medical expenses for the victim. It emphasizes the ongoing struggle for safety and security faced by survivors of domestic violence.
This incident sheds light on the broader issue of violence against transgender individuals, particularly those who are Black and people of color. According to the Human Rights Campaign, at least 32 transgender and non-binary people were fatally shot or killed by other violent means last year, with a disproportionate number of victims being Black trans women.
If you or someone you know is experiencing partner abuse, resources like The Network/La Red’s 24-hour hotline can provide confidential support and assistance. It is crucial to raise awareness about the challenges faced by transgender individuals, especially those from marginalized communities, and work towards creating a safer and more inclusive society for all.
The crowdfunding campaign serves as a reminder of the resilience and strength of survivors of violence and the importance of coming together as a community to support those in need. By standing in solidarity with survivors and advocating for their rights, we can work towards a future where incidents like this are prevented and all individuals are able to live free from fear and harm.
