In recent years, Scottish Greens politician Ross Greer has been facing a surge in homophobic abuse, with the situation worsening considerably. Greer, who made history as the youngest member ever elected to the Scottish Parliament at the age of 21 in 2016, has spoken out about the serious homophobia he encounters, even within the parliamentary setting.
In an interview with the PA news agency to mark the 25th anniversary of the first MSPs being elected, Greer, now 29, revealed that he also faces ageism, which he finds “very silly.” The West Scotland MSP expressed his concerns about the deteriorating state of LGBTQ+ rights in Scotland, noting that the country is now a more hostile place for LGBT individuals compared to five years ago.
Greer highlighted the toxic and adversarial environment that has taken hold within the parliament, lamenting that it has started to mirror the behaviors of Westminster that it was originally intended to reject. He pointed to the contentious debates surrounding gender recognition reform as a prime example of the escalating tensions within the political landscape.
The Gender Recognition Reform (Scotland) bill, which aimed to simplify the process for trans individuals to update their birth certificates, faced strong opposition and ultimately got blocked by the UK government. Prime Minister Rishi Sunak and Labour leader Keir Starmer expressed concerns about the potential implications of the bill on the country’s equality laws, leading to its rejection.
Despite criticism that Scottish politicians are focusing on what some deem as “woke issues,” Greer defended the parliament’s attention to matters concerning minority groups. He argued against the notion that governing should prioritize only the top three issues of health, education, and the economy, emphasizing that progress on social issues like equal marriage, protection against discrimination, and rights for disabled individuals would have never been achieved under such a narrow approach.
The challenges faced by Greer highlight the ongoing struggle for equality and inclusivity within Scottish politics. As homophobic abuse continues to plague public figures like him, it serves as a stark reminder of the work that still needs to be done to create a more tolerant and accepting society for all individuals, regardless of their sexual orientation or gender identity.
In conclusion, Ross Greer’s experiences shed light on the pressing need for greater awareness and action to combat homophobia and discrimination in all its forms. As Scotland grapples with these issues, it is imperative that steps are taken to address systemic inequalities and create a more inclusive and equitable society for everyone.
