In a recent revelation, Australian footballer Josh Cavallo has made it clear that he would not attend the 2034 FIFA World Cup in Saudi Arabia if selected, citing the country’s anti-gay laws as a major concern. The 24-year-old openly gay athlete expressed his fear for his safety in a country where homosexuality is illegal and punishable by death.
Saudi Arabia, known for its strict laws against LGBTQ+ individuals, scored only 14 out of 100 in terms of LGBTQ+ rights according to Equaldex. Cavallo emphasized the need for football clubs to take a stand against countries with discriminatory laws by refusing to participate in events held in such locations.
Speaking to the Daily Mirror, Cavallo stated, “I honestly wouldn’t feel safe. It’s sad to say that, but even in my football career, there [are] certain countries I will not go to and play club football or with the national team.” He highlighted the limitations he faces due to his sexual orientation and stressed the importance of significant improvements before considering participation in such events.
This is not the first time Cavallo has spoken out against discriminatory practices in football. In the past, he criticized the decision to hold the World Cup in Qatar, another country where being gay is illegal. Despite his childhood dream of playing in a World Cup, Cavallo remains steadfast in his refusal to compromise his values for the sake of his career.
“Clubs should turn around and support LGBT+ people,” Cavallo asserted. He acknowledged the conflict between his livelihood and his principles, lamenting the fact that he must choose between his passion for football and his identity as a gay man. He called for a collective effort to ensure that countries like Saudi Arabia and Qatar are not granted the privilege of hosting prestigious tournaments.
Since publicly coming out as gay in 2021, Cavallo has faced a barrage of death threats and homophobic abuse. However, he finds solace in knowing that his visibility has inspired and empowered other LGBTQ+ individuals. Despite the challenges he has encountered, Cavallo remains resolute in his commitment to advocating for inclusivity and acceptance within the sports industry.
In March, Cavallo announced his engagement to Leighton Morrell, further solidifying his stance as a proud and unapologetic advocate for LGBTQ+ rights. He commended his team, Adelaide United, for their unwavering support and urged other teams to follow suit in promoting inclusivity and diversity.
As awareness and acceptance of LGBTQ+ individuals continue to grow in Australia, Cavallo remains hopeful for a more inclusive future in the world of sports. He emphasized the need for ongoing efforts to combat discrimination and prejudice, reaffirming his dedication to fighting for equality and representation.
In conclusion, Josh Cavallo’s unwavering stance against discriminatory practices in football serves as a powerful reminder of the importance of inclusivity and acceptance within the sports industry. As he continues to advocate for change, Cavallo’s impact resonates far beyond the confines of the football field, inspiring individuals worldwide to stand up for their rights and embrace their true selves.
