Cyclist Emily Bridges has been at the center of a national debate since coming out as transgender in 2020. Her journey in the cycling world began at the age of nine when she moved to Wales and started competing at the age of 11. Despite facing multiple accidents early in her career, Bridges showed resilience and talent, winning silver medals at national championships.
In 2017, at the age of 16, Bridges won a silver medal at the junior nationals and joined the Great Britain Junior Academy, a prestigious program for Olympic hopefuls. She continued to excel in her sport, winning titles and placing fourth at the World Junior Championships. However, her success was overshadowed by the toxic abuse she faced due to her transgender identity.
Bridges made headlines when she penned an op-ed for Sky Sports on National Coming Out Day in 2020. She received support from British Cycling CEO Julie Harrington, who applauded her courage and wished her the best for the future. Despite the initial positive response, Bridges soon found herself in the midst of controversy.
In 2022, Bridges was barred from competing in a major British Cycling championship due to her transgender status. The Union Cycliste Internationale ruled her ineligible to participate in the women’s category, leading British Cycling to suspend its trans and non-binary participation policy. This decision sparked a nationwide debate on trans women’s inclusion in female sports.
British Cycling later introduced an ‘open’ category for transgender athletes, but Bridges refused to compete in it, citing safety concerns and the need for trans women to ‘out’ themselves to participate. She expressed her disappointment with British Cycling’s decision and vowed to challenge it in court, claiming a violation of her human rights.
Despite facing backlash and discrimination, Bridges was recognized for her influence and bravery by being included in British Vogue’s list of influential women. She received support from activists and allies who celebrated her inclusion in the list, highlighting her fight for fairness and acknowledgment in the sporting world.
In an opinion piece for British Vogue, Bridges addressed the abuse she receives online from anti-trans activists and gender-critical individuals. She emphasized the importance of challenging societal norms and breaking down barriers in sports for transgender individuals. Despite the negativity she faces, Bridges remains determined to continue her fight for inclusivity and equality in sports.
As she prepares to take her battle to court and challenge discriminatory policies, Emily Bridges stands as a symbol of resilience and determination in the face of adversity. Her story sheds light on the challenges faced by transgender athletes and the ongoing struggle for acceptance and recognition in the world of sports.
