A new trailer has dropped for Elliot Page’s upcoming project, the lesbian cheerleading film “Backspot,” and it promises to be an intense and exhilarating ride for viewers. The film stars Devery Jacobs as Riley, a talented cheerleader who is offered the opportunity to join the prestigious Thunderhawks squad, coached by the ruthless Eileen McNamara, played by Evan Rachel Wood.
As Riley navigates the pressures of being on the brink of superstardom in the cheerleading world, she must also contend with her crippling anxiety and maintain her relationship with fellow cheerleader Amanda, portrayed by Kudakwashe Rutendo. With a major competition on the horizon, Riley’s journey to success is fraught with challenges and obstacles that she must overcome.
The official synopsis of the film reads: “Overwhelmed, obsessive and with a competition looming, this young queer athlete must decipher her own voice from the women around her, and form a healthier relationship [with] the sport she loves.” Executive produced by trans trailblazer Elliot Page through his production company Pageboy Productions, “Backspot” marks the feature-length debut of non-binary director D. W. Waterson.
In the newly released trailer, viewers get a glimpse of Riley’s transformation from a school gym cheerleader to a star performer in front of screaming crowds. The stakes are high, and the tension is palpable as Riley’s journey unfolds on screen. The film premiered at the Toronto Film Festival last September to positive reviews and currently holds a 77 percent approval rating on Rotten Tomatoes.
“Backspot” is scheduled to open on May 31, although it is unclear whether this release date pertains to a domestic or international audience. The film joins the ranks of queer sports movies set for release this spring, such as Zendaya’s tennis drama “Challengers,” which is slated for an April 26 release.
In other queer sports film news, “God’s Own Country” star Josh O’Connor has confirmed that his character in “Challengers” has a “fluid” sexuality and shares a kiss with co-star Mike Faist in the film. These developments highlight the growing representation of LGBTQ+ characters and stories in mainstream cinema.
As audiences eagerly anticipate the release of “Backspot” and other queer sports films, the industry continues to make strides towards greater diversity and inclusion on screen. With talented actors like Devery Jacobs and Evan Rachel Wood bringing these stories to life, viewers can expect a compelling and authentic portrayal of queer experiences in the world of sports.
In conclusion, “Backspot” promises to be a groundbreaking and impactful addition to the queer film landscape, showcasing the talent and creativity of its cast and crew. Audiences can look forward to a captivating and thought-provoking cinematic experience when the film hits theaters later this year.
